This document discusses the production design elements for a stage performance of Julius Caesar, including costumes, makeup, lighting, set design, and the director's vision. Costumes will distinguish main characters and show blood effects during the assassination. Lighting will focus scenes, set moods, and reinforce images. The set will feature a gray floor and columns to indicate an ancient Roman setting, with background elements changing to indicate location. The director intends a naturalistic style and realistic human emotions, and has ideas for casting the main roles and emphasizing the theme of fate versus human action.
5. Killing of Julius Caesar
● Theatrical blood can be used to present the idea of a
character being stabbed/wounded.
● Small explosive balloons called “squibs” can be hidden
underneath the costume and when punctured, will look
like actual blood.
7. Ghost of Caesar
● A plain white toga with the appliance of white powder
and makeup on the visible body parts will give the
illusion of a ghost.
● Black eyeshadow can be used to present dark circles
around the eyes.
13. Focus and visual composition
● The lighting focuses on
Artemidorus trying to get
Caesar to read an urgent letter
which contained a warning to
Caesar about Brutus.
14. Visibility
● It is important to provide enough
light for the audience to be able
to view the play with clarity.
15. Reinforcing a central image
● The lights are dimmed in
the scene on the sides of
the stage, only focusing
on Caesar’s dead body
and Brutus, who plotted
and did murder Caesar.
16. Mood
● Lights can also be used
to set a mood. For
example, the lights could
turn red in the scene
when Brutus and his
conspirators stab
Caesar.
18. Types of lighting
● Automated lights that move and
follow a character as he walks
across a stage and can change
colors depending on the mood being
portrayed.
19. Types of lighting(cont.)
Flood
light(right)
Scoop
light(left)
Border light
● They also use “general
wash lights” which include
flood, scoop, PARcan,
and border lights. Their
use is to provide a large
amount of light without
being focused
20. Light properties
● Productions will also use a
Light Board. The Light Board is
used to control the color,
intensity, and brightness of the
light being projected.
22. Time and Place
● The amount of light that
is shown can also be an
indicator of the time and
season that is occurring.
23. Proscenium Stage
● Proscenium Stage is
more efficient to change
the backgrounds
between plays.
24. Background
● A dull gray floor with
columns in the
background to portray
an ancient time era.
● For scenes in the tent,
a huge red cloth will
cover the back and top
to portray inside of a
tent.
25. Background
● Trees on the background
during the battle scenes to
give a sense of nature.
26. Background
● A huge black crow will
be on the top of the
stage. It will scream
right before someone
is about to die.
27. Focus
● In coordination with the
light design crew, a red
light will focus only on the
crow every time it caws.
28. Set up Speed
● There will be a crew trained
to transform the stage with
minimum consumption of
time so audience does not
have to wait long.
29. Foreground
● Different props throughout the play
will be used such as tables, chairs,
beds, etc.
30. Surroundings
● Some of the actors will
stand around the stage
next to the columns as
guards to show power of
Caesar.
32. Script

. Generally something the director is familiar with
. The director ensures character roles are easily identified
33. Spine
. “Motivation of the play”
. To build a better and more powerful Rome by any means necessary
. To remove Caesar from power
34. Style
. Naturalism
. Very realistic, meant to appear historically accurate
. Characters experience natural and real human emotions
35. Cast: Caesar
. Ambitious and powerful male
. Middle Aged
. Stern looking, all business
. Ideally portrayed by Liam Neeson
36. Cast: Brutus
. Proud and trusting male
. Caesar’s best friend
. Ideally portrayed by Hugh Jackman
37. Cast: Cassius
. Jealous and angry male
. Intense hatred of Caesar
. Must seem devious
. Ideally portrayed by Jude Law
38. Theme
. Fate vs Action
. Cassius convinces Brutus that fate doesn’t exist and men make themselves
. This could be emphasized by proving that everything Caesar accomplished was by his own
ambition and action, and Caesar only died because of Brutus’s decision
39. Directorial Concept
. True to Period - Meant to portray Rome at the height of Caesar’s power
. True to Purpose - The story is in no need of altering
. Image - Presence of menacing music whenever a death is about to occur
