July 1-3, 1863
 The Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st
through July 3rd, 1863 in Gettysburg, PA.
 Many historians consider the battle a major turning
point in the American Civil War.
 On November 19th, 1863 Pres. Abraham Lincoln
delivered his famous “Gettysburg Address” at the
dedication ceremony for the Gettysburg National
Cemetery.
Confederacy (CSA) Union
Gen. Robert E. Lee Gen. George Meade
As General Lee led his Army of Northern Virginia
(71,000 soldiers) back into northern territory, he was
met at Gettysburg by General Meade and his Army of
the Potomac (93,000 soldiers). Meade’s forces took
defense upon a ridge to the northwest side of town.
Lee’s men attacked them, collapsing their defenses and
sending them retreating back into town.
By Day 2 most of the majority of the two armies had
finally arrived and assembled for battle. The Union
army was in a fishhook shaped formation and was
attacked on their left flank. Fierce fighting took place
on such famous locations as “Little Round Top”, “Devil’s
Den”, and “Culp’s Hill”. Despite losing many men, the
Union army was able to repel the Confederate attack.
As fierce fighting continued on “Culp’s Hill”, the
Confederate army geared up for one final assault,
“Pickett’s Charge”. 12,500 Confederate soldiers attacked
the center line of the Union defense but were turned
back. This defeat left Lee and his Confederate army
retreating back into Virginia.
 Approximately 51,000 soldiers (23,000 Union and
28,000 Confederate) were either wounded, killed, or
captured.
 One known civilian casualty: twenty year old Ginnie
Wade was killed by a stray bullet that came through
her kitchen.
 On July 4th, Lee’s army began their retreat back south.
His train of wounded and defeated men stretched 14
miles.
