IT departments today need help getting their jobs done. They need products that weren’t designed for “enterprise” usage – they need radically simple management interfaces. Their budget is also under pressure, so they need to control costs while maintaining performance. They also need to keep their company or organization’s data safe from internal and external threats. IT departments today need better storage, and EMC is delivering that in the form of the VNXe3200.

The new VNXe3200™ has the power of EMC’s flash optimized VNX2 unified storage systems - compressed into an efficient, easy-to-use package designed for resource-constrained IT departments in any size company.
With MCx, we’ve rewritten our software to make use of threads and resources vs. simply using more sockets and cores at higher clock rates. It’s similar to the effect of hyper-threading on processors in general.
These systems were re-architected to automate the use of a fast layer of SSD drives to boost performance and auto-tier based on hot spot recognition in the system using EMC’s FAST Suite.
The new VNXe3200™ has the power of EMC’s flash optimized hybrid VNX storage systems - compressed into an efficient, easy-to-use package designed for resource-constrained IT departments in any size company.
We’ve added MCx, Fibre Channel support, and enhanced our base software to include more functionality like snapshots, security & compliance, and Monitoring and Reporting for no additional cost. These systems were re-architected to not only support flash drives but to optimize for flash drives by automating and auto-tiering data into and out of flash based on hot spot recognition in the system - using EMC’s FAST Suite.

The VNXe3200 also has leading edge efficiency features which lower the overall cost.
Lower $/IOPS and $/GB with new FAST VP and FAST Cache – with set it and forget it tuning.
Reduce capacity requirements by up to 50% with thin provisioning and file dedupe
Deliver up to 125 VM’s and 500 desktops in a 4U footprint with MCx multi-core optimization – a great price/performance ratio.
The FAST Suite combines auto tiering and SSD caching in a single package to benefit from both the immediate benefit of caching writes and the longer term benefit of tiering storage.
File deduplication finds duplicate files that haven’t changed in 15 days, and compresses them down to a single instance - saving significant space on file shares and NFS datastores. This feature has been shown to reduce physical capacity needs by 50 percent or more.
Thin provisioning is a storage provisioning technology which allows the storage system to provide up front storage to file servers and applications without consuming actual storage space. Thin provisioning can result in lower storage costs due to better disk utilization and can reduce some of the administrative overhead associated with monitoring individual volumes.
And MCx delivers incredible processor efficiency alongside a boosted Sandy Bridge 2.2 Ghz Intel chip.

Not only is the VNXe3200 simple and efficient, it is also protected - with powerful features inside and outside the array to safeguard your data.
Internally, the system has expanded RAID options, dynamic/automatic hot sparing, drive mobility, and new Unified Snapshots which are simple and space-efficient for making quick copies of production data. It has a very simple interface for scheduling and deleting the snapshots, so you always have the right copy available and don’t accidentally create too many snapshots.
The VNXe3200 is the first array to support the new VPLEX Virtual Edition (standard edition) which is targeted at iSCSI / ESX environments and allows users to stretch their VMware live migrations and vMotions – enabling VMHA and VMF across two sites. It’s a powerful capability which can extend the availability features of the VNXe3200 outside the box. We’ve qualified several types of protection technology – from hypervisor-based (VMware or Hyper-V and application-based replication (Exchange, SQL, Oracle) to Data Domain and the Data Protection Suite. This gives our customers the most choice about how they want to protect their data locally and remotely. Remote replication will be an optional add-on capability in the near future.
Finally, we’ve worked with the Data Domain team to make available several bundles within the EMC Store and in the VSPEX program using the best entry level primary and protection storage products on the market!

Typical storage arrays are blissfully unaware of today’s demanding virtual server environments.
EMC has taught or arrays to handle these situations better – whether provisioning VMs, making copies faster and avoiding host-based data transfers, getting better visibility into the virtualization stack, or having tools which provide self-service controls over data.
The VNX family has the best virtualization integration with over 96 integration points into both VMware® and Hyper-V. With VNXe, you can easily deploy private clouds with deep VMware and Microsoft integration. For three years in a row, an independent research firm Wikibon named EMC VNX/VNXe the #1 storage for VMware integration.
This slide is the system health screen. It shows you photo realistic image of the back of the VNXe3200. There are realistic images for all major components. When a problem occurs it is color coded:
Yellow = Warnings
Orange = Errors
Red = Faults
The message noted in this situation is that a power supply has been removed. A couple of clicks and you get full guidance on what to do.

The most economical way to deploy Flash is in hybrid or multitier storage arrays combining low-cost, high-capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) and high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) to deliver low storage cost per I/O. Hybrid arrays balance performance and price because a little Flash goes a long way. The new VNXe adds to EMC’s lineup of Flash optimized hybrids. It’s the most affordable flash optimized hybrid storage system on the market today.
Using a mix of SSD and HDD allows VNX and now VNXe customers a change to lower their overall $/IOPS and $/GB
FAST VP autotiering moves cold workloads from high performance disk to lower cost disk without manual intervention – providing storage cost reductions and operational efficiencies over time. This works extremely well in mixed workload VMware and Hyper-V environments.
FAST Cache uses SSDs to act as an extension of the system cache – up to 200GB can be used to boost application and database performance by up to 3X.
And the system supports two kinds of SSDs – SLC (more durable for FAST Cache) and a new eMLC FAST VP SSD (only to be used in the pool)
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation.
By using a small amount of Flash, FAST provides Flash performance to busy workloads, with the economic savings of cheaper rotating drives storing the idle workloads (reduce drive count by up to 66% while increasing performance, according to IDC). FAST also eliminates the manual administrative process of balancing workloads due to seasonal demand.
Let’s look a little more about how FAST VP autotiering works:
FAST VP slices storage into 256MB slices and begins measuring performance
Hot data is relocated to SSD slices while cold data is relocated to low cost HDD slices
Customers can reduce drive count by up to 66% while increasing performance (IDC)
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation.
On a VNXe3200 you can enable up to 200GB of SSD to be used as FAST Cache, which can provide up to 3X the performance of your Hyper-V, VMware, XenDesktop, Exchange, or SQL Server environments. FAST Cache is a system wide resource and provides efficient caching at a 64K level.

Storage must be lean and highly efficient to satisfy the rigorous demands of today’s IT. Data is simply growing faster than IT budgets can keep up. Relentless efficiency is mandatory. Gone are the practices of wasteful thick LUNs and file systems. Over the last couple of years, EMC has seen IT move to a just-in-time provisioning model where storage capacity is allocated upon consumption. This practice is commonly referred to as thin LUNs or thin provisioning.
In thin LUNs, capacity from the system’s storage pool is only used when new and additional data is written. If data is erased, the capacity is given back to the pool. Liberating IT from having to “guess” the right amount of storage needed for each user and application in advance has yielded much higher utilization rates. EMC typically sees a shift from 60 percent storage utilization to 90 percent or higher. This means you actually can store more data without having to buy more storage. With classic thick LUNs and direct attached storage, IT shops had no choice but to live with 40 to 60 percent wasted resources. This is now a thing of the past. Thin LUNs prevent it.
But thin LUNs are not the only capacity-efficiency feature that the VNXe series offers to challenge rising storage costs. The VNXe series also offers File-Level Deduplication and LUN Compression. Combining both with thin provisioning doubles system efficiency. This means you get twice the usable capacity per IT dollar spent. Your budget effectively stretches twice as far.
This is an important aspect of the efficiency strategy. With the VNXe series’ efficiency technologies, IT is ready to meet new and increasing demands.
The VNXe series’ capacity efficiency technologies are designed to work together and may be combined to achieve the ideal, highly efficient mix of performance, capacity, power, and footprint.
New snapshots are introduced for VNXe.
They are
Simple
No setup required is required and you can schedule them directly from Unisphere
Smart
You can set an auto-delete policy to delete snapshots beyond a certain day and set a snapshot threshold to not exceed a specified percentage of space on the volume.
Efficient
Uses Thin Provisioning and Copy on Redirect technology for faster completion and less overhead comparable to traditional snapshots.
This new snapshot technology is great for making point-in-time copies of file and block data. Because it supports 256 writable snaps per LUN, 96 writable snaps per file system and snaps of snaps for file, it is ideal for test/dev, logical point-in-time disk backups and data repurposing scenarios. These snaps are writable logical copies and more efficient than full physical copies.
Use cases include application and virtualization copies and VDI - VMware Fast Clone
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation.
A final note on efficiency is the new MCx architecture which allows the VNXe3200 system to effectively utilize the Sandy Bridge 2.2 GHz processor to it’s fullest extent. This capability, combined with a more powerful CPU and 48GB of RAM, allows this system to get 3X the performance of a VNXe3150.
In our VSPEX reference architectures, we were able to get 125 VM’s, 500 Virtual Desktops, and 2000 Exchange users in only a 4U space. This density is impressive and shows the incredible price/performance of the VNXe3200.

Note to Presenter: Use this slide if the audience asks about EMC’s integration between ViPR and VNX family platforms. 3 key things to highlight:
centrally manage storage resources – emc and 3rd party
integrate with cloud stacks such as VMware, Microsoft, and OpenStack.
3) supports de facto industry standard object storage APIs including, Amazon S3, EMC Atmos, and OpenStack Swift so applications written to those APIs can run on VNX. These APIs also allow organizations to migrate applications previously written to public cloud storage back under data center control.
When we look at the data center, there really are two layers of systems:
The COMPUTE layer where you run your applications in virtual servers, and
The STORAGE layer where data is protected and delivered back to the applications as needed
TOGETHER these two layers form a large complex SYSTEM. And to federate management of this horizontally scaling and expanding system, we need ViPR. It is open and heterogeneous
