                                                   Introduction
This Insights Discovery profile is based on Berk SARICA’s responses to the Insights
Preference Evaluator which was completed on 28-2-2012.
The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates
identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built
around the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung.
This model was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in
subsequent writings. Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as
the seminal work in understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands
of researchers to the present day.
Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for
self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self,
both strengths and weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for
interaction and can help them to better respond to the demands of their environment.
Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It
reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or
delete any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends
to identify whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you.
Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take
action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them
on areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth
personally and interpersonally.

                                                       Overview
These statements provide a broad understanding of Berk’s work style. Use this section to gain
a better understanding of his approaches to his activities, relationships and decisions.

Personal Style
Berk is hardworking, righteous, fiercely independent and convinced that moral good must win
above all else. He is convinced that a successful life needs to be tough and that satisfaction
must be earned and re-earned. He should learn to delegate more to improve the completion of
his tasks and should have assistance in ensuring that follow up is maintained. He is often
successful in improving efficiency and reducing time wasting in others. He is adept at homing
in on the essence of complicated, confusing situations. Articulate and thinking, he tends to be
matter-of-fact and practical. He likes a fast pace and is adept at using functional devices and
procedures.

He is persevering, with a singleness of purpose that he devotes to long term achievement of the
mind. He is an ideal academic who continually seeks knowledge for its own sake. He is not
impressed with authority as such but can conform to rules if he sees them as useful to his
greater purpose. He likes to make sure that he knows what is going on and tries to make sure
that everyone is pulling their weight. As he likes conversation to be purposeful, and may argue
practicalities to the point of hair-splitting, he tends to be convinced only by reason. Berk is at
home in the energetic administration of practical matters.

Although objective, he may be more interested in finding creative solutions to problems than in
seeing those solutions become reality. Berk is realistic and dependable. Once committed to an
idea or project, Berk has enormous resolve to carry it through and would like others to share
his determination. He tends to be realistic and matter-of-fact about work issues. His interest
lies in seeing possibilities beyond what is already present and known, by using his insight,
ingenuity and intellect.

At work he often makes significantly more starts than finishes and he may need someone else
to follow through with the details. Berk is seen by others as pragmatic, dependable and able to
get things done. He is keen to pick out logical inconsistencies. Under moderate tension, he is
still able to reflect and become more efficient and effective. His knack for identifying and
attending to key issues positions him well in dealing with an emergency. Berk believes in doing
everything the right way and his preoccupation with perfection makes him sensitive to errors or
unfairness.

He aims to live by his rules and believes that everyone else should do too! He is seen as a
powerful leader as he is able to think on his feet. To manage his tensions, he needs to be
constantly in control and get things done without wasting time. He attends to and likes to
remember significant events and important detail. Others need to be sure of their facts. He
focuses on truth, accuracy and productivity, but this can be seen by others as a rather one-sided
commitment to his work. Berk is the conceptual problem solver, intensely intellectual and

logical, exhibiting flashes of creative brilliance.

Interacting with Others
Seen by most people as outgoing, flexible and fearless, Berk can rise to meet any challenge.
Although his emotional and social life may not seem as important to him as other aspects of
life, he tends to seek consistent and stable relationships. He may have an aversion to having his
time and energy constantly put at the disposal of others. If his work constantly requires him to
be warm and outgoing with others, he finds this draining after a while and may need to take
some private time out before regrouping. He is outstanding at establishing and implementing
orderly procedures, rules and regulations, and may show impatience with those who don't carry
out their designated tasks or work by the rules.

Most people have limited understanding of his complex, adaptable and creative mind. Berk is
alert to changing situations and will act quickly to get results, giving direction or instructions to
others as he thinks is necessary. When he turns his highly honed critical appraisal skills on the
people around him, honesty may be translated into unintended hurtfulness. He may see his
objectives and goals so clearly that he fails to take other views and possibilities into account.
He usually remains sceptical, decisive and determined in the face of difficult opposition.

His independence can lead others to think of him as aloof. He likes to be out and about doing
things in the world but he needs to take care to look ahead to the consequences of his present
actions. He tends to mistrust people who he thinks are ignoring reality. He is not a “party
animal” and often prefers his own company. He is not particularly discouraged by indifference
or criticism.

Decision Making
Berk tends to be seen as strong, analytical and impersonal. Good at organising, decisive,
quick, logical and strong in reasoning power, he values truth in the form of fact, formula,
method and judgement. He may at times make others feel defensive due to his incisive, critical
and often persistent questioning. He prefers to learn from personal experience and not just
from study or reading. He is adaptable but constantly needs to get results. He applies analysis
and objectivity to discover the underlying principles, relying on clear thinking in making
decisions.

People count on Berk for insightful analyses and forthright judgements. He values truth above
all else and is primarily convinced by logical reasoning. In his mind there must always be a
good reason for doing something and people's feelings alone aren't normally sufficient to
influence him. He prefers action to conversation and enjoys dealing with difficult situations the
moment they arise. He seeks realistic and satisfying solutions to challenges.

His effectiveness depends on how much personal fulfilment he receives from the current task.
Although gifted in both sensing and intuition, he may well rather base plans and decisions on
established procedures than listen to his inner voice. He has the ability to use both reflection
and consultation in reaching conclusions. He makes decisions after a great deal of thought and

he may not be dissuaded by emotional or muddled arguments. Berk's many accomplishments
are achieved mainly through determination and perseverance in reaching or exceeding his high
standards.

                           Key Strengths & Weaknesses
Possible Weaknesses
Jung said “wisdom accepts that all things have two sides”. It has also been said that a
weakness is simply an overused strength. Berk's responses to the Evaluator have suggested
these areas as possible weaknesses.

Berk’s possible weaknesses:

Can be seen as curt and abrasive.

Blaming and judgmental, particularly when challenged on shortcomings.

             Constantly finding faults.

Spots others weaknesses but not his own.

May ride rough-shod over others' feelings.

Often fails to take sufficient account of others opinions.

             Lacks tact and diplomacy.

Could appear to be too demanding of exact standards.

             Over-dependence on rules and procedures.

May pay lip service to “team” issues.

Barriers to Effective Communication
Certain strategies will be less effective when communicating with Berk. Some of the things to
be avoided are listed below. This information can be used to develop powerful, effective and
mutually acceptable communication strategies.

When communicating with Berk, DO NOT:

Try to build a relationship too quickly.

             Argue or personalise the conversation.

Forget to balance interaction with time for reflection.

             Challenge his perception of himself.

             Challenge his authority “head on”.

Be too light hearted or superficial.

             Question his motives or competence.

Show less than full commitment to his project.

             Come unprepared and disorganised.

Try to manipulate him towards your viewpoint.

             Ramble or become emotional.

Digress or wander off at a tangent.

                                      Possible Blind Spots
Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who
we are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect
our less conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed
“Blind Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware
and test them for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.

Berk’s possible Blind Spots:

Berk would sometimes benefit from finding out what matters emotionally to others. Perhaps
best thought of as one of life's natural organisers, he is practical, strong willed and needs to get
his own way or he may become rebellious. An adoption of a simple lifestyle may be perceived
by others as a somewhat miserly choice! He likes pace, but also plenty of time and opportunity
to seek perfection in everything he does. Giving in on small items decreases the likelihood of
him being seen as too stubborn and controlling.

He should learn to be more considerate by thinking through how his actions will affect others.
He is something of a perfectionist, and can be hypersensitive to criticism of his work. As a
logical and impersonal analyst, he doesn't always consider the impact of his decisions on
others. He seeks to adopt a strict code of ethics and values for both self and others and can be
seen as dictatorial when he attempts to impose his standards. He needs to work toward
becoming more articulate and action-oriented.

He can appear arrogant and suddenly nit-picking if his performance is not recognised by a
superior he values. He enjoys positions of authority and influence in his peer group and his
ability to join in quick decision making within the group may be countered by a need to reflect,
and later attempt to reverse, important decisions made. He would do well to accept that people
he respects may want to know what is going on in his life, and he should realise that the only
one who can provide the accurate map is him.

                                               Opposite Type
The description in this section is based on Berk's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often,
we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are
different to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for
personal growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness.

Recognising your Opposite Type:

Berk’s opposite Insights type is the Helper, Jung’s “Feeling” type.
Helpers are warm, understanding and sociable individuals who strive for positive relationships
with people both at work and home. They are usually sensitive to others and work well in a
team situation. However, Berk may observe that the Helper takes criticism personally and
finds it difficult to become authoritative or objective with others when necessary. Helpers
sometimes have difficulty in making key decisions without consultation.
Berk will notice that people are far more important to the Helper than the accomplishment of
tasks. The Helper’s nature tends to be personable, which may mean that Berk sees them as
fickle or soft. Helpers can be stressed in fast moving, impersonal situations which change
without warning. Helpers display their emotions and usually have limitless patience for those
who are dependent on them. They will usually ignore judgements that rely heavily on logical
analysis - often the judgement preferred by Berk.
Helpers will tend to avoid telling someone an unpleasant truth or tell it in an affirmative way.
Helpers are accommodating and occasionally self-effacing and are always content to support
others without expecting much in return. Berk may see the Helper idealising others and
adopting a romantic version of people and their potential.

Communication with Berk's Opposite Type
Written specifically for Berk, this section suggests some strategies he could use for effective
interaction with someone who is his opposite type on the Insights Wheel.

Berk SARICA: How you can meet the needs of your Opposite Type:

Allow him time to talk it over with those who may be affected.

Be prepared to make allowances for his occasional mistakes.

Be prepared to negotiate solutions slowly, calmly and quietly.

Allow time for fun and socialising.

Keep up a lively, but steady pace.

Share in and promote his ideas and visions.

Berk SARICA: When dealing with your opposite type DO NOT:

Take issue with his demeanour or jaunty disposition.

Be cold, aloof or adopt an autocratic approach.

Ignore his creative and intuitive thinking.

             Take credit for his ideas.

Forget to recognise him personally in a job well done.

             “Tell”, instruct or command.

                           Suggestions for Development
Insights Discovery does not offer direct measures of skill, intelligence, education or training.
However, listed below are some suggestions for Berk’s development. Identify the most
important areas which have not yet been addressed. These can then be incorporated into a
personal development plan.

Berk may benefit from:

Accepting that perfection can be a rather obstructive standard to constantly aspire to.

Becoming more generous, warm and caring.

Looking for the good in everything.

Avoiding driving others as hard as he drives himself.

Asking others to help him keep his workload down to reasonable limits.

Gently asking some quieter people to express their point of view.

Knowing it is OK to relax and laugh at himself.

Being more prepared to acknowledge his mistake.

             Becoming less objective at times

Ensuring his keen desire to criticise is positive and not negative.

  • 4. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 4 Introduction This Insights Discovery profile is based on Berk SARICA’s responses to the Insights Preference Evaluator which was completed on 28-2-2012. The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built around the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This model was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings. Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work in understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to the present day. Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help them to better respond to the demands of their environment. Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or delete any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identify whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you. Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them on areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personally and interpersonally. http://www.insightsworld.com/ © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. • 5. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 5 Overview These statements provide a broad understanding of Berk’s work style. Use this section to gain a better understanding of his approaches to his activities, relationships and decisions. Personal Style Berk is hardworking, righteous, fiercely independent and convinced that moral good must win above all else. He is convinced that a successful life needs to be tough and that satisfaction must be earned and re-earned. He should learn to delegate more to improve the completion of his tasks and should have assistance in ensuring that follow up is maintained. He is often successful in improving efficiency and reducing time wasting in others. He is adept at homing in on the essence of complicated, confusing situations. Articulate and thinking, he tends to be matter-of-fact and practical. He likes a fast pace and is adept at using functional devices and procedures. He is persevering, with a singleness of purpose that he devotes to long term achievement of the mind. He is an ideal academic who continually seeks knowledge for its own sake. He is not impressed with authority as such but can conform to rules if he sees them as useful to his greater purpose. He likes to make sure that he knows what is going on and tries to make sure that everyone is pulling their weight. As he likes conversation to be purposeful, and may argue practicalities to the point of hair-splitting, he tends to be convinced only by reason. Berk is at home in the energetic administration of practical matters. Although objective, he may be more interested in finding creative solutions to problems than in seeing those solutions become reality. Berk is realistic and dependable. Once committed to an idea or project, Berk has enormous resolve to carry it through and would like others to share his determination. He tends to be realistic and matter-of-fact about work issues. His interest lies in seeing possibilities beyond what is already present and known, by using his insight, ingenuity and intellect. At work he often makes significantly more starts than finishes and he may need someone else to follow through with the details. Berk is seen by others as pragmatic, dependable and able to get things done. He is keen to pick out logical inconsistencies. Under moderate tension, he is still able to reflect and become more efficient and effective. His knack for identifying and attending to key issues positions him well in dealing with an emergency. Berk believes in doing everything the right way and his preoccupation with perfection makes him sensitive to errors or unfairness. He aims to live by his rules and believes that everyone else should do too! He is seen as a powerful leader as he is able to think on his feet. To manage his tensions, he needs to be constantly in control and get things done without wasting time. He attends to and likes to remember significant events and important detail. Others need to be sure of their facts. He focuses on truth, accuracy and productivity, but this can be seen by others as a rather one-sided commitment to his work. Berk is the conceptual problem solver, intensely intellectual and http://www.insightsworld.com/ © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved.
  • 6. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 6 logical, exhibiting flashes of creative brilliance. Interacting with Others Seen by most people as outgoing, flexible and fearless, Berk can rise to meet any challenge. Although his emotional and social life may not seem as important to him as other aspects of life, he tends to seek consistent and stable relationships. He may have an aversion to having his time and energy constantly put at the disposal of others. If his work constantly requires him to be warm and outgoing with others, he finds this draining after a while and may need to take some private time out before regrouping. He is outstanding at establishing and implementing orderly procedures, rules and regulations, and may show impatience with those who don't carry out their designated tasks or work by the rules. Most people have limited understanding of his complex, adaptable and creative mind. Berk is alert to changing situations and will act quickly to get results, giving direction or instructions to others as he thinks is necessary. When he turns his highly honed critical appraisal skills on the people around him, honesty may be translated into unintended hurtfulness. He may see his objectives and goals so clearly that he fails to take other views and possibilities into account. He usually remains sceptical, decisive and determined in the face of difficult opposition. His independence can lead others to think of him as aloof. He likes to be out and about doing things in the world but he needs to take care to look ahead to the consequences of his present actions. He tends to mistrust people who he thinks are ignoring reality. He is not a “party animal” and often prefers his own company. He is not particularly discouraged by indifference or criticism. Decision Making Berk tends to be seen as strong, analytical and impersonal. Good at organising, decisive, quick, logical and strong in reasoning power, he values truth in the form of fact, formula, method and judgement. He may at times make others feel defensive due to his incisive, critical and often persistent questioning. He prefers to learn from personal experience and not just from study or reading. He is adaptable but constantly needs to get results. He applies analysis and objectivity to discover the underlying principles, relying on clear thinking in making decisions. People count on Berk for insightful analyses and forthright judgements. He values truth above all else and is primarily convinced by logical reasoning. In his mind there must always be a good reason for doing something and people's feelings alone aren't normally sufficient to influence him. He prefers action to conversation and enjoys dealing with difficult situations the moment they arise. He seeks realistic and satisfying solutions to challenges. His effectiveness depends on how much personal fulfilment he receives from the current task. Although gifted in both sensing and intuition, he may well rather base plans and decisions on established procedures than listen to his inner voice. He has the ability to use both reflection and consultation in reaching conclusions. He makes decisions after a great deal of thought and http://www.insightsworld.com/ © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved.

  • 9. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 9 Key Strengths & Weaknesses Possible Weaknesses Jung said “wisdom accepts that all things have two sides”. It has also been said that a weakness is simply an overused strength. Berk's responses to the Evaluator have suggested these areas as possible weaknesses. Berk’s possible weaknesses: Can be seen as curt and abrasive. Personal Notes http://www.insightsworld.com/ © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. • 10. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 10 Value to the Team Each person brings a unique set of gifts, attributes and expectations to the environment in which they operate. Add to this list any other experiences, skills or other attributes which Berk brings, and make the most important items on the list available to other team members. As a team member, Berk: Is unlikely to get side tracked by peripheral items. Brings a critical eye to improve team performance. Can be both efficient and effective in achieving the tasks at hand. Brings direction and realism to every project. Maintains team's focus on objectives. Can be relied upon to pull more than his weight. Has a “can do” attitude. Can negotiate practical solutions. Brings drive and focus to the issues. Always looks for ways to improve his and the team's, performance. • 11. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 11 Communication Effective Communications Communication can only be effective if it is received and understood by the recipient. For each person certain communication strategies are more effective than others. This section identifies some of the key strategies which will lead to effective communication with Berk. Identify the most important statements and make them available to colleagues. Strategies for communicating with Berk: Remember to thank him for his time. Allow him time to consider all the information. Be straightforward, fast, efficient and to the point. Leave personalities out of the discussion. Respond positively to his thoughts. Take things one step at a time. Let him know he is in control. Be receptive and open minded. Act in an adult and mature way. Acknowledge your understanding of his ideals and values, although they may be different. Focus on the task at hand. Be clear about expectations and timescales. • 12. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 12 Communication Barriers to Effective Communication Certain strategies will be less effective when communicating with Berk. Some of the things to be avoided are listed below. This information can be used to develop powerful, effective and mutually acceptable communication strategies. When communicating with Berk, DO NOT: Try to build a relationship too quickly. • 13. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 13 Possible Blind Spots Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who we are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our less conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “Blind Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test them for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues. Berk’s possible Blind Spots: Berk would sometimes benefit from finding out what matters emotionally to others. Perhaps best thought of as one of life's natural organisers, he is practical, strong willed and needs to get his own way or he may become rebellious. An adoption of a simple lifestyle may be perceived by others as a somewhat miserly choice! He likes pace, but also plenty of time and opportunity to seek perfection in everything he does. Giving in on small items decreases the likelihood of him being seen as too stubborn and controlling. He should learn to be more considerate by thinking through how his actions will affect others. He is something of a perfectionist, and can be hypersensitive to criticism of his work. As a logical and impersonal analyst, he doesn't always consider the impact of his decisions on others. He seeks to adopt a strict code of ethics and values for both self and others and can be seen as dictatorial when he attempts to impose his standards. He needs to work toward becoming more articulate and action-oriented. He can appear arrogant and suddenly nit-picking if his performance is not recognised by a superior he values. He enjoys positions of authority and influence in his peer group and his ability to join in quick decision making within the group may be countered by a need to reflect, and later attempt to reverse, important decisions made. He would do well to accept that people he respects may want to know what is going on in his life, and he should realise that the only one who can provide the accurate map is him. • 14. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 14 Opposite Type The description in this section is based on Berk's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often, we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness. Recognising your Opposite Type: Berk’s opposite Insights type is the Helper, Jung’s “Feeling” type. Helpers are warm, understanding and sociable individuals who strive for positive relationships with people both at work and home. They are usually sensitive to others and work well in a team situation. However, Berk may observe that the Helper takes criticism personally and finds it difficult to become authoritative or objective with others when necessary. Helpers sometimes have difficulty in making key decisions without consultation. Berk will notice that people are far more important to the Helper than the accomplishment of tasks. The Helper’s nature tends to be personable, which may mean that Berk sees them as fickle or soft. Helpers can be stressed in fast moving, impersonal situations which change without warning. Helpers display their emotions and usually have limitless patience for those who are dependent on them. They will usually ignore judgements that rely heavily on logical analysis - often the judgement preferred by Berk. Helpers will tend to avoid telling someone an unpleasant truth or tell it in an affirmative way. Helpers are accommodating and occasionally self-effacing and are always content to support others without expecting much in return. Berk may see the Helper idealising others and adopting a romantic version of people and their potential. • 15. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 15 Opposite Type Communication with Berk's Opposite Type Written specifically for Berk, this section suggests some strategies he could use for effective interaction with someone who is his opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Berk SARICA: How you can meet the needs of your Opposite Type: Allow him time to talk it over with those who may be affected. Be prepared to make allowances for his occasional mistakes. Be prepared to negotiate solutions slowly, calmly and quietly. Allow time for fun and socialising. Keep up a lively, but steady pace. Share in and promote his ideas and visions. Berk SARICA: When dealing with your opposite type DO NOT: Take issue with his demeanour or jaunty disposition. Be cold, aloof or adopt an autocratic approach. Ignore his creative and intuitive thinking. Take credit for his ideas. Forget to recognise him personally in a job well done. “Tell”, instruct or command. • 16. Insights Discovery 3.0.1 Berk SARICA Page 16 Suggestions for Development Insights Discovery does not offer direct measures of skill, intelligence, education or training. However, listed below are some suggestions for Berk’s development. Identify the most important areas which have not yet been addressed. These can then be incorporated into a personal development plan. Berk may benefit from: Accepting that perfection can be a rather obstructive standard to constantly aspire to. Becoming less objective at times Ensuring his keen desire to criticise is positive and not negative.
