K12 Online A Unique Conference
Are you interested in learning more about technology but don’t have the time to attend a workshop or conference?
Darren Kuropatwa, Sheryl Nussbaum Beach, Wesley Fryer and Lani Ritter Hall have organized the K12 Online Conference just for you . You can attend virtual sessions whenever you have the time.
The K12 Online is a conference for educators by educators. This map shows educators from around the world who have visited the K12 Online Conference website. The larger the dot, the more people who have attended.
Over a two week period, four presentations are posted each day for you to choose from. Select the presentation you want and listen or watch to learn, explore and create.
The sessions are organized into four strands with keynotes and live events throughout. Classroom 2.0 Obstacles to Opportunities Professional Learning Network New Tools
K12 Online Conference Keynote David Warlick "Inventing the New Boundaries“
Virtual Fireside Chats Join the conference organizers and the keynote speakers in free wheeling open-ended chats in Elluminate. One chat will follow the pre-conference keynote. Two others will be scheduled during the two weeks of the conference presentations. This is open to anyone interested in participating. A link to the chat will be published on the blog well before the time we’ll get together. Ask the keynotes about their presentation and share your thoughts and ideas about the other presentations seen that week. This is an opportunity for all presenters and participants to get together and discuss anything on your mind. With David Warlick View the Elluminate Live! recording Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8:00 AM With Week One Keynotes and Presenters https://sas.elluminate.com/m .jnlp?sid=2 007095&password=M .7115FA90A18944DFD E02B70CCAD62A Tuesday, October 23 at 6:00 PM Fireside Chat With Week Two Keynoters and Presenters https://sas.elluminate.com/m .jnlp?sid=2007095& password=M .214C12CCC5DB9DCB930DCD20BD4050
Classroom 2.0 Leveraging the power of free online tools in an open, collaborative and transparent atmosphere characterises teaching and learning in the 21st century. Teachers and students are contributing to the growing global knowledge commons by publishing their work online. By sharing all stages of their learning students are beginning to appreciate the value of life long learning that inheres in work that is in “perpetual beta.” This strand will explore how teachers and students are playing with the boundaries between instructors, learners and classrooms. Presentations will also explore the practical pedagogical uses of online social tools (Web 2.0) giving concrete examples of how teachers are using the tools in their classes.
Classroom 2.0 Keynote and Presentations Keynote Clarence Fisher "Classroom 2.0 or You Live Where?“ Presentations Silvia Tolisano “Travel Through Space and Time” Anne Davis “Putting the Pedagogy into the Tools” Vance Stevens, Nelba Quintana, Doris Molero, Saša Sirk, and Rita Zeinstejer “Motivating Student Writers by Fostering Collaboration through Tagging and Aggregating” Dean Shareski “Design Matters” Konrad Glogowski “Initiating and Sustaining Conversations: Assessment and Evaluation in the Age of Networked Learning” Chris Harbeck “Release the Hounds” Drew Murphy “Step by Step- Building a Web2.0 Classroom” Jeff Utecht “Sustained Blogging in the Classroom” Wendy Wolfe “If All My Classes Did This”
New Tools Leveraging the power of free online tools in an open, collaborative and transparent atmosphere characterises teaching and learning in the 21st century.
New Tools Keynote and Presentations Keynote Alan Levine, Brian Lamb, D'arcy Norman "More Than Cool Tools “ Presentations Liz Kolb “Cell Phones as Classroom Learning Tools” Sharon Betts “Oodles of Googles” Cheryl Oakes, Bob Sprankle, Alice Barr “Flat Agents of Change” Anne Davis “Learn to Blog : Blog to Learn” Kevin Jarrett and Sylvia Martinez “Second Life: K-20 Educators Exploring Virtual Worlds - Panel” April Chamberlain “Trailfire” Kurt Paccio and James Gates “The Electric Slide! Twenty-First Century Style” Jason Hando “LMS 2.0 - Engaging Learners Using More Advanced Techniques and the Odd Mash-up inside Moodle”  Frank Pirrone “Collaborative Concept Mapping - Breaking the Bounds of Location and Time... for $0.00 per Seat”
Professional Learning Networks Research says that professional development is most effective when it aims to create professional learning communities — places where teachers learn and work together. Using Web 2.0 tools educators can network with others around the globe extending traditional boundaries of ongoing, learner centered professional development and support. Presentations in this strand will include tips, ideas and resources on how to orchestrate your own professional development online; concrete examples of how the tools that support Professional Learning Environments (PLEs) are being used; how to create a supportive, reflective virtual learning community around school-based goals, and trends toward teacher directed personal learning environments.
Professional Learning Networks Keynote and Presentations Keynote Derek Wenmoth "Holding a Mirror to our Professional Practice“ Kevin Hodgson and Bonnie Kaplan “The Collaborative ABC Project: Using Technology To Tell Stories” Brandi Caldwell “Creating PLE's with TLC” Lee Baber, Paul Allison, Susan Ettenheim and Thomas Locke “Building Online Communities for Youth” Vinnie Vrotny “Expanding Horizons - Engaging the Adult Members of your Community (Teachers, Administrators, and Parents) through the Use of Personal/Professional Learning Networks” These presentation will go live beginning Monday, Oct. 22. Visit http://k12onlineconference.org/docs/k12online2007schedule.html for the presentation links. Jen Wagner, Cheryl Oakes, Vicki Davis, Sharon Peters “Webcasting for Educators: Expanding the Conversation” Sharon Peters, Vincent Jansen “Building a Yardstick for PD Success: Establishing Key Performance Indicators for Web 2.0 Personal Optimized Learning Environments” James Folkestad “Changing a System: Network Centric Learning Communities” Jeff Utecht “Online Professional Development” Alex Ragone and Arvind Grover “EdTechTalk: A Network of Homegrown Webcasters”
Obstacles to Opportunities Boundaries formalized by education in the “industrial age” shouldn’t hinder educators as they seek to reform and transform their classroom practice. Playing with boundaries in the areas of copyright, digital discipline and ethics (e.g. cyberbullying), collaborating globally (e.g. cultural differences, synchronous communication), resistance to change (e.g. administration, teachers, students), school culture (e.g. high stakes testing), time (e.g. in curriculum, teacher day), lack of access to tools/computers, filtering, parental/district concerns for online safety, control (e.g. teacher control of student behavior/learning), solutions for IT collaboration and more — unearthing opportunities from the obstacles rooted in those boundaries — is the focus of presentations in this strand.
Obstacles to Opportunities Keynotes and Presentations Keynote Brian Crosby "Obstacles To Opportunities - The Why's And The Wherefores“ Sylvia Martinez “Challenging Assumptions About Technology Professional Development” Karen Richardson “Crossing the Copyright Boundary in the Digital Age” Patrick Ledesma “The Technology Specialist as Teacher Leader: Strategies to Ensure Successful Technology Integration and Student Learning in Schools” Lisa Durff “Pushing the Envelope or How to Integrate Web 2.0 Tools on a Shoestring” These presentation will go live beginning Monday, Oct. 22. Visit http://k12onlineconference.org/docs/k12online2007schedule.html for the presentation links. John Pearce ”Me blog? No Way!!!” Sylvia Martinez “Web 2.0 Share the Adventure” Joseph Bires “Acceptable Use and the Web 2.0” Ben Wilkoff “Starting From Scratch: Framing Change for All Stakeholders” Shawn  Nutting “Creating a Paradigm Shift in Technology”
Culminating Events When Night Falls , is a chain of several 1 or 2 hour long Elluminate sessions stretching over a 24 hour period; a 24 hour continuous K12 Online coffee break! The purpose of When Night Falls is twofold: To give participants an opportunity to share reflections, to build networks and relationships and to make connections with each other. Hopefully, some of the connections people make at K12 Online will grow into global collaborations for students and support networks for all of us as we continue to push the envelope of teaching and learning in the 21st century. To get feedback on this year’s conference as we begin to plan for next year. Volunteer moderators plan and implement the sessions which are loosely structured to encourage open ended conversations. Friday, Oct. 26 beginning at 7:00 PM until Saturday, Oct. 27 At 7:00 PM When Night Falls Begins TO JOIN IN https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=2007095&password=M.9A22958F5C9502E8DB6FB4E756DD82
Thoughts, Ideas, etc. If you choose to take advance of this unique conference, please share which presentations you attended, what you learned, ideas for using technology in the classroom, and more by e-mailing April Chamberlain.
