Segregation at Source using Green and Red Bins . Green bins for wet waste and Red bins
for dry waste . The drums that are kept on trolleys which fit into the lifts for collection
Information Board and Waste Management “Kit “
Wet waste is segregated and ready for putting into the compost bed

COW and its DUNG the magic
                                        element for composting
LEAF Composting

Plastics and paper are separated from leaf litter . Garden waste is mixed with
cow dung slurry and added on the compost bed.
Leaf litter is converted into useful leaf mulch!
Tertiary Segregation of plastic items from your RED bins

If plastic is mixed with food waste, plastic also starts stinking , difficult to
store in our storage units before sending for recycling.
Tertiary Segregation of aluminum from your RED bins

Let us recycle aluminum and contribute to reduction in bauxite mining
denuding our forests !
Tertiary Segregated waste converted into resource for selling

In six months Tungabhadra has generated an income of close to 1 lakh from
recyclables, compost, panchagavya for sustaining zero waste management
Non Recyclable Plastic Menace

 Aluminum coated plastic covers are non
           recyclables
 Out of 650 Kg of plastic covers
generated in 8 months, 200 Kg was non
           recyclable plastic covers from various
           brands
 In summary, 32% of plastic covers
generated from 220 apartments need to
reach the landfill or burnt !
 Why not ban these packaging ?
Every month 220 apartments generate approximately 4.5 tonnes of waste.
At Tungabhadra, only 10% of 4.5 tonnes reaches the landfills , which is
                               450 Kg !

Tungabhadra generated Rs.1.86 lakhs as income from Sales (2012-13)
Out of which Rs. 93,000 was from recyclables
Our Eco Products

Egg Shell powder Panchagavya as Bio Fertiliser for plants and
                                    Bio Accelarator for faster composting

                                          Benefits of Panchagavya:
Compost 1. Bigger leaves, denser Canopy
                                          2. Increases biological efficiency thus aiding
                                             composting (works like EM )
                                          3. Trunk produces side shoots (carry Max. fruits)
                                          4. Rooting is profuse and dense and remains fresh
for long. Roots spread and grow into deeper
                                             layers
                                          5. A thin oily film is formed on the leaves and
                                             stems, which helps reducing the
                                             evaporation of water.
                                          6. Withstands long dry periods due to deep and
                                             extensive roots.
Residents can purchase all eco products 7. Irrigation water requirement reduced by 30%.

  • 3. Our backyard before Zero Waste Management Tubelights were burnt posing threat to children playingNGV Residents' . Labourers used this space for open Tungabhadra in the vicinity Welfare Tungabhadra NGV Residents' Welfare Association, Bangalore Association, Bangalore
  • 4. Segregation at Source using Green and Red Bins . Green bins for wet waste and Red bins for dry waste . The drums that are kept on trolleys which fit into the lifts for collection
  • 5. Information Board and Waste Management “Kit “
  • 6. Wet waste is segregated and ready for putting into the compost bed COW and its DUNG the magic element for composting
  • 7. LEAF Composting Plastics and paper are separated from leaf litter . Garden waste is mixed with cow dung slurry and added on the compost bed. Leaf litter is converted into useful leaf mulch!
  • 8. Tertiary Segregation of plastic items from your RED bins If plastic is mixed with food waste, plastic also starts stinking , difficult to store in our storage units before sending for recycling.
  • 9. Tertiary Segregation of aluminum from your RED bins Let us recycle aluminum and contribute to reduction in bauxite mining denuding our forests !
  • 10. Tertiary Segregated waste converted into resource for selling In six months Tungabhadra has generated an income of close to 1 lakh from recyclables, compost, panchagavya for sustaining zero waste management
  • 11. Non Recyclable Plastic Menace  Aluminum coated plastic covers are non recyclables  Out of 650 Kg of plastic covers generated in 8 months, 200 Kg was non recyclable plastic covers from various brands  In summary, 32% of plastic covers generated from 220 apartments need to reach the landfill or burnt !  Why not ban these packaging ?
  • 12. Every month 220 apartments generate approximately 4.5 tonnes of waste. At Tungabhadra, only 10% of 4.5 tonnes reaches the landfills , which is 450 Kg ! Tungabhadra generated Rs.1.86 lakhs as income from Sales (2012-13) Out of which Rs. 93,000 was from recyclables
  • 13. Our Eco Products Egg Shell powder Panchagavya as Bio Fertiliser for plants and Bio Accelarator for faster composting Benefits of Panchagavya: Compost 1. Bigger leaves, denser Canopy 2. Increases biological efficiency thus aiding composting (works like EM ) 3. Trunk produces side shoots (carry Max. fruits) 4. Rooting is profuse and dense and remains fresh for long. Roots spread and grow into deeper layers 5. A thin oily film is formed on the leaves and stems, which helps reducing the evaporation of water. 6. Withstands long dry periods due to deep and extensive roots. Residents can purchase all eco products 7. Irrigation water requirement reduced by 30%. for plants by exchanging newspaper
  • 15. Aspects of ZWM Implementation
  • 16. What worked well ? Challenges  Support of AID , Seattle  Difficulty in getting land approval from KHB  Waste Management Consultant , Vellore Srinivasan  People resistance since we were early adopters before  One time setup cost borne by every household BBMP driving waste management  Rs.2 per family per day as service charge from every apartment  Labour challenges due to local politics with cleaning for “managing “ waste contractors, Local dumping contractor playing politics to stop  Support main office bearers in the Management Committee the fee waiver,  Incentive by KHB at the end of 6 months to give a fee waiver  People not complying with 100% segregation at source ..  Segregation at the back end was kicked off simultaneously Still a problem after 1.5 years with source segregation  Other operational challenges in the initial phase for labour  New ZWM co coordinator after a year (Ensuring the project intake doesn’t depend on individuals , but on processes )  Local politics by residents in the community  Latest direction by BBMP Weakness Threats  Flooring for the ZWM Segregation Yard …  People within the community turning against Zero Waste  100 % Segregation .. More volunteers , more door to door Management campaigns  Few resistors turning instigators for closure Low selling Items  Tender coconut husk , tender coconut shell – Buyers come only if there is tonnage  Tube Lights recycling   Slippers ! …. No Takers …   Construction Waste … 
