MATERIAL DESIGN « Let’sanalyzeourowncontext »
Purpose Gaingreaterawareness of thediversity of factors and criteriawhichmight be takenintoaccountwhendesigningmaterials.
Schoolselected Institucion Educativa Antonio Nariño. Grade: 8°
Tasks
1. Theobjective of theclass Deepen knowledge of the English language through the use of TELL ME MORE software. Is the objective coherent with the material used in class ? The objective was completely coherent based on everything observed because all the students were acquiring and practicing the target language !!
2. Samples
Working in thelab!
Makinginstructionsclear !!
Studentfeeling at easewiththe material !!
material differed in learningstyles !!!
Material achievedimpact !!!
3. Towhatextend do these material accomplishthe7 principles? Material should achieve impact. Material should help learners to feel at ease. Learners must be ready to acquire the points being taught. Materials should provide to the learners with opportunities to use the target language to achieve communicative purposes. Material should take into account that learners differ in learning styles. Materials should take into account that learners differ in affective attitudes. Materials should provide opportunities for outcome and feedback.
Material should achieve impact: Novelty: here the students had an unusual topics and illustrations because they make use of a software where they choose by themselves the topic and the type of exercise which they wanted to do. Variety: here the students broke up with the monotony not only in the classroom with the books and the teacher talking all the time, like we said in the “novelty” they work in their computers and have different types of exercises in a different resource (computer and software). Attractive presentation: here we emphasize in the program where students work because they have enough space in which to work, have the use of photographs in which they made exercises of matching and had with spaces in which they feel more interested in working. Appealing content: material in which students work aroused great interest in discovering new things in the English and their desire to learn something new is bigger. investigate, play and do exercises on the topics and doing common things that students gain an interest in the English. Material should help learners to feel at ease: taking into account the this principle, students had a desire to learn more and to learn new things in English, feel comfortable and come together at the same pace obtaining new knowledge, show a great interest in texts with images of exotic cultures than ever had seen before. felt very comfortable with the texts that try to help them improve their workouts. Learners must be ready to acquire the points being taught: Readiness was a point which caught the attention for us because students wanted to interact with unknown topics and achieve activities in the software. The material accomplish to this principle for the reason that the material used offered different and unfamiliar topics for the learning process.
Materials should provide to the learners with opportunities to use the target language to achieve communicative purposes: Learners interacted with each other with the help of the earphones in some exercises, also they wrote stories of a video watched in the software, they made post listening and post-reading of the video. All this helped to develop the communicative purposes and with these students were not restricted to use the language only with the teacher’s instructions and material. Material should take into account that learners differ in learning styles. Different learners have different preferred learning styles say the principle and it’s what we could observed in the class, students chose the exercise in which they felt more confortable to learn. Materials should take into account that learners differ in affective attitudes: This principle was touched by its surface, we are talking about the variety of choices and different types of activities because we didn’t see any discussion or maybe the teacher being aware of the cultural sensitive and familial or personal problems of the pupils. Materials should provide opportunities for outcome and feedback: Maybe the objective was not to produce an outcome in this lesson and was centered in the development of another skills but not the communicative skill which was depending of the interaction between teacher and students or students and students, but they didn’t take it into account so feedback process wasn’t complete.
4. What do youfeelwhen looking at material? We were very surprised because of all those materials, the tecnology used for teaching English, the first thing that we did was to remember when we were in high school it was pretty different than those times. Also we felt confortable, the environment and the student’s material were in a perfect state. Furthermore the software which students practice is very updated.
5. How do you think the designer got prepared to produce the material? national bilingualism program offered this great opportunity to three schools of Monteria, the school observed by our group was one of those schools, the main objective of the design of these laboratories is that students have a closer relationship with the target language.
6. What resources do youthinkwereused? they make use of the software (tell me more), also each student have their own computer to work in, they have internet, video bean, headphones and a digital board that is pretty interesting and appealing.
7. What habilitiescouldthedesignerexpectlearnerstoodevelop? Listening Reading Speaking
8. Wereactivities and instructionsclear? students knew how to use the material properly and if there was any doubt in something the teacher made it again clear instructions to handle the material. The activities were clear too because the software gave the instructions in order to interact with it in the different stages of the program.
9. What do youlike most aboutthis material? Do youthinkyou can produce something similar? Betterormuchbetter? What we liked most was: Environment, the technological material and that students of a public school have this opportunity . abouttheproduction of a new material wethinkthatit’s almost imposible to make something similar, but with efforts we can try to produce a different material which provide students with the different principles before mentioned.!
10. Our material designingproposal !! our proposal material was based on one of the topics with which students interacted with the software which was the family. with this idea we wanted to create a family tree of a member of that family for students to create sentences relating to the family and descriptions of it.
12. What has thisactivitytaugthyouabouttheprocess of material design? It was a great experience to observe the use of materials Because this taught us that the designing of material is very important for the acquisition of learning because if we provide good material for students then they will feel comfortable with the topics to learn.
THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION !!

The objective was completely coherent based on everything observed because all the students were acquiring and practicing the target language !!

Material should take into account that learners differ in learning styles. Materials should take into account that learners differ in affective attitudes. Materials should provide opportunities for outcome and feedback.
  • 16. 5. How do you think the designer got prepared to produce the material? national bilingualism program offered this great opportunity to three schools of Monteria, the school observed by our group was one of those schools, the main objective of the design of these laboratories is that students have a closer relationship with the target language.
  • 17. 6. What resources do youthinkwereused? they make use of the software (tell me more), also each student have their own computer to work in, they have internet, video bean, headphones and a digital board that is pretty interesting and appealing.
  • 19. 8. Wereactivities and instructionsclear? students knew how to use the material properly and if there was any doubt in something the teacher made it again clear instructions to handle the material. The activities were clear too because the software gave the instructions in order to interact with it in the different stages of the program.

It was a great experience to observe the use of materials Because this taught us that the designing of material is very important for the acquisition of learning because if we provide good material for students then they will feel comfortable with the topics to learn.
