Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born in 1791 in London. She is the daughter of Mary
Wollstonecraft and William Goodwin. Wollstonecraft was a radical feminist writer, and Goodwin
was a writer as well as a philosopher. It was said that this couple's combined intellect was dangerous
to society; however, days after Mary's birth, Wollstonecraft died due to complications from the
pregnancy. Mary spent a lot of time visiting her mother's grave when she was growing up. Her

In the summer of 1816, tensions began to lift long enough for the brilliant Mary to envision the story

Religion was a very important aspect of everyday life, and majority the travelers to the new world
had strong beliefs. This powerful faith is shown by puritans, William Bradford and Mary
Rowlandson. These two characters in both of their stories showed their strong relationship with
God. They tended to be more dependent on God to show them the way, instead of them making

While being on water traveling by ship, there wasn't much either of them could do to make the
conditions any better. William Bradford couldn't make his conditions improve due to his location
on the water, far away from the resources that could help his situation. On William's ship the
Mayflower one main problem was sickness and disease. Since the people were on a ship so close
to each other the disease would spread quickly, and with lack of medical knowledge and help many
would die. Some would just become sick from the cold and the wetness from the horrible weather
they would have on their journey. Frequent storms not only caused trouble for the people on board
but also caused damage to the ship. Equiano couldn't change his conditions due to his standing as an
African American slave, so he had no say or no control over what happened to him. His journey is

The Mad Mother William Wordsworth Analysis
In 1798, William Wordsworth published a collection of poems titled Lyrical Ballads. Two years later
in 1800, Mary Robinson published a similar collection titled Lyrical Tales as a response. From
Lyrical Ballads, Wordsworth wrote "The Mad Mother" and Robinson wrote a similar poem, "The
Widow's Home" in Lyrical Tales. These two poems usedialogue to tell their stories and as a way for
Robinson to prove herself as a Romantic poet. "The Mad Mother" focuses on a supposedly insane
single mother, speaking to her infant while he breast feeds. In the first stanza, it is seen that the
narrative perspective is third person as the mother is described: "She has a baby on her arm,/or else
she was alone" ("Mad Mother" 5–6). However, the remaining stanzas in the poem are dialogue from
the mad mother. For example, "Sweet babe, they say I am mad" (11). The mother claims not to
be mad, however she shows an unhealthy connection and dependence on her son. As Robert Hale
states, "she is so closely bonded that she does not appear to distinguish external from internal
reality" (Hale 109). She relies on her connection with her son to make herself feel sane. As the son
is only an infant, his only action in the poem is breastfeeding, as shown when the mother states
"Suck, little babe, oh suck again!" ("The Mad Mother" 30). This act is very significant to the

The witch trials were a very interesting part of the early 1600's. The Crucible written by Arthur
Miller was written for the time period 1620. He wrote this play for the purpose of displaying
communism and showing the red scare that was happening to his community in the 1950s. He

in the salem trials was happening with the communist trials. He took historical accounts from
Salem Massachusetts and created characters on what he read. Two characters he wrote about

It is clear that the two were in the field that day and they both saw very similar things which the
also interpreted very similarly. When we compare William's poem and Dorothy's journal we can
see both comparisons and contrasts between the texts. The different comparisons we see may
help us understand why Dorothy did not achieve such fame as her brother had. Dorothy's
description of the text is very natural as she is simply describing what she saw and how she saw
it then and there. When she first saw the daffodils she simply says 'When we were in the woods
beyond Gowbarrow park we saw a few daffodils close to the water side. We fancied that the lake
had floated the seeds ashore and that the little colony had so sprung up.' (Journals of Dorothy
Wordsworth: The Alfoxden Journal 1798, The Grasmere Journals 1800–1803). When William
describes the field full of Daffodils he uses a great deal of description to emphasis the beauty of
the flowers and to make it clear about how he felt. In contrast to Dorothy's initial reaction to the
daffodils William says 'When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake,
beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.' (William Wordsworth, 'I wandered lonely as a

When he was young he would spend much of his time playing outdoors with his sister. Dorothy
would often comment on the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It was because of his sister that
he grew to love nature. His love for nature led him to write the first romantic poetry of that time
period and started the Romantic Movement in England. Many of his poems were written about the
nature that he encountered in his daily life. Others were of experiences in which he felt great

John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, also English Romantic Poets, were influenced by

During his early school days, he was bullied due to his more pretty rather than handsome looks,
because of this he developed a hatred for oppression which lasted a lifetime (O'Connor). The
victimization he endured and the social as well as political injustices he observed and read about
led him to become a dissident against irresponsible power, recognizing in self–seeking forte and
undemanding conformism props to injustice. Having started writing in his teens Shelley first
wrote about gothic horror despite his passion to change the world. He commenced in Oxford in
early 1810, but was expelled short of a year due to an iconoclasm publication he wrote with
Thomas Hogg. It wasn't until 1813 while living in London that his first important poem was
published by Thomas Hookham, during this time he also befriended William Goodwin "the primary
source of Shelley's egalitarian political thought." (O'Connor). Shelley traveled a bit more after this
moving from place to place exploring different types of writing. Then by 1818 he fell into a
transformed wordsworthian form of writing with the poems "Hymn to intellectual beauty" and
"Mont Blanc." These two poems suggest a nonanthropomorphic something whose influence is
behind all things but can only be known secondarily through one's own creative intellect. In 1839

empire, with one of the largest slave economies in the world, to end an institution they had heavily
relied on for centuries in the span of fifty years. This question has plagued historians for nearly two

Through his analysis of the slave economy in the British West Indies, Williams steered the
conversation towards capitalism rather than an idealized focus on evangelical leaders. He devotes
the first section of the book to providing an outline of the economic situation of these slave–holding
British colonies. During which, Williams places a heavy emphasis on the significance mercantilism,
which focuses on accumulating wealth through exportation, played in creating the prosperous
plantation systems. He then turns to his principal argument. In the decades prior to abolition in

Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman sets out to invalidate the social and
religious standards of her time in regards to gender, just as William Blake sets out to do the same
for children. Both Blake and Wollstonecraft can be read by the average man and woman, lending its
attention toward both upper and middle class. Wollstonecraft's revolutionary themes of tyranny and
oppression of women parallel the themes in Blake's poetry of the tyranny and oppression of children;
hence, leading the reader to the Romantic notion of empathy.

Because women of her time were seen as "creatures" who lacked good sense and moral virtues,
Wollstonecraft vehemently defends her gender by shifting the cause of these "female follies," on
men and argues, "From the tyranny of man, I firmly believe, the greater number of female follies
proceed; and the cunning, which I allow makes at present a part of their character, I likewise have
repeatedly endeavored to prove, is produced by oppression."
Blake directly addresses the same Romantic theme of tyranny and oppression towards children in
"Holy Thursday" wherein he bluntly, yet poetically says, "Is this a holy thing to see/ In a rich and
fruitful land/ Babes reduced to misery/ Fed with cold and usurious hands" (lines 1–4).
Although Blake uses poetic blatancy, while Wollstonecraft uses direct nonfiction prose, both
epitomize "Romanticism" with their revolutionary themes of an unjust system of society that points
towards immoral conduct by using the weaker for their own happiness and gain.
A characteristic tone of Romanticism is to evoke empathy within the reader to gain a deeper
understanding of the revolutionary topics. In Vindication, as Wollstonecraft argues that a woman
should have proper education so that she may exercise her hidden power of the use of reason when
"young love" grows cold and she can no longer please her husband, she addresses this issue by
