1. Take Home Exams
and how to survive them

2. Take home exams may lull us
into a false sense of security.
After all, you can do them in
your pyjamas, with all your
texts on hand and a pile of
snacks to see you through.
These are certainly advantages.

3. But do not be fooled. Time
limits are strict - you will need
a very good excuse indeed to
get an extension of more than
a few hours. Also, the
standard expected of your
answers is necessarily high.

4. Usually, take home exams will
require thorough familiarity
with the theories and
material, and an ability to
apply principles quickly and
accurately.

5. Organise your time before the exam
• make your notes clear and easily
accessible
• Be sure you have access to any texts
you are likely to need.
• create cross references to important
articles or books that you may need to
consult.
• ensure you understand all relevant
course material beforehand

6. Be prepared
• Work out how much time you will allot to
each section
• Cancel all other commitments for that
day
• Stock up your home with anything you
may need on the day: pre-cooked meals,
snacks, clean clothes
• Block your social media

7. Remember, a take home exam
is neither easier nor more
difficult than any other kind
of exam. Just different.
Prepare well and do well.
