What is Research ?
 An art of scientific investigation
• Scientific and systematic search for relevant information
on a specific topic
•Process of arriving at dependable solutions to problems
through the planned and systematic collection, analysis
and interpretation of data

A systematized effort to gain new knowledge…
A movement from the unknown to
the known
• Search for (new) knowledge/ facts through objective,
systematic and scientific method of finding solution to a
problem
•Not synonymous with commonsense. It is not about a pre-
conceived idea but to discover something new.
What is
Methodology ?
A Methodology is usually a guideline system for
solving a problem, with specific components such as
phases, tasks, methods, techniques and tools.

•The analysis of the principles of methods, rules,
and postulates employed by a discipline
•The systematic study of methods that are, can be,
or have been applied within a discipline
•The study or description of methods
Research Methodology
•A science of studying how research is done
scientifically
•A way to systematically solve the problem by
logically adopting various steps
•It helps to understand not only the products of
scientific inquiry but the process itself
•It tends to describe and analyze methods, throw
light on their limitations and resources, clarify
their preassumptions and
consequences,formulate hypothesis.
•It helps to reach a specific conclusion
•Characteristics of a good research :
                           systematic
                           specific
Objectives of Research
Methodology
•Give credibility to a claim or belief & to solve a problem

• Show the source of data mining in order to prove the
depth, extent and validity of research

• Leads to discovery and inventions; most scientific
discoveries happened through this pattern

• Give the readers an idea on what devises are good for a
particular data

• Helps to create awareness of special needs of research
process

•Facilitates reference and information service
Approaches to
RM

 Quantative approach
Involves the generation of data in quantative form
which can be subjected to rigorous quantative
analysis in a formal and rigid fashion

 Types of Quantative approach
 •Inferential approach
 •Experimental approach
 •Simulation approach
Inferential approach
•The purpose of this approach is to form a database from which to infer
characteristics or relationships of population.
•e.g. survey report of a sample of population its characteristics is
studied, and it is determined that the entire population has the same
characteristics

Experimental approach
•This approach has much greater controller over the research
environment and in this case some variables are manipulate to observe
their effect on the results
•e.g.companies using different methods to enhance the management of
the organization

Simulation approach
•This approach involves the construction of an artificial environment
within which relevant information and data can be generated. This
helps in studying the dynamic behaviour of a system under controlled
conditions.
Qualitative approach
•Qualitative research is concerned with
subjective assessment of
attitudes,opinions and behaviour

•Research in such situation is a function of
researcher’s insights and impressions

•The results generated from this approach
are non-quantative and not subjected to
rigourous analysis
