2. What is a Colorimeter?
A Colorimeter measures light absorbance at a particular
wavelength.

The term photometer and colorimeter are often inter-
changed.

The term ‘photometer’ includes instruments that can
measure scattered light intensity, absorbance or
fluorescence.
A spectrophotometer measures light absorbance across
multiple wavelengths per measurement.

Beer’s Law
Simply stated:
There is a logarithmic relationship between the light

absorbed when passed through a colored medium to
the amount of colored substance in the light’s path and
the length of that path.

YSI uses absorbance but provides a direct
readout measurement.

Summary
Light passes through a reacted sample and is
absorbed in amounts proportional to the

concentration of the analyte you are testing.
The colorimeter measures the absorbance and
displays it as a concentration.
