Employment history/career synopsis in order from 1989 to 2015:
• Start 1989 - end 1992 Learner official(mining) JCI (REGM Cooke
Shafts) – 3 years full training programme to become a mining
official(all certificates) Left for promotion in-house.
• Start 1993 - end 1996 Operations supervisor and Mine
Overseer(JCI and RPM) – 4 years in mining production. Carried
legal appointments for underground production positions. About
500 production staff under my control. Left for in-house
promotion.
• Jan 1997 Operations Manager(1 year) at Anglo Boschfontein #
producing Merensky and UG2 reefs U/G by means of
conventional and trackless mining methods(150kt reef/month and
about 3000 employees under my control). Left for secondment
opportunity in-house to H/O.
• Jan 1998 Research and Development Mining Engineer
secondment(Anglo-Platinum H/O) 1 year, to start several trackless
mining projects. This is typically done with young mining
engineers with sound production experience. Left for operational
re-deployment back to BRPM.
• Jan 1999 - Dec 2002 Mining optimisation and mechanisation co-
ordinator (Anglo Platinum and BRPM) – 4 years secondment to
put structures and systems in place for a new underground and
surface mine with acting stances as production Business Area
Manager(3.1A legal appointment). Resigned for position offered
by AEL to get sales and marketing and explosives engineering
experience and qualifications.
• Start 2003 - end 2004 AEL business area manager - 2 years
(technical and sales and marketing and business management
4. mainly)- R250m account managed. Left for in-house promotion
opportunity.
• Jan 2005 - end 2006 AEL business development manager and
contracts manager (value mining projects – 2 years mining
contracting to fix a marginal mine after detailed constraints
analysis and agreed projects to address production bottlenecks).
Left AEL due to limited opportunities at that stage and having
being engaged by a major mining company.
• Jan 2007- end 2009 – 3.1A appointed Mine Manager
Rowland#(flagship operation) at Lonmin Platinum producing 230
000 tonnes/month reef and 30000 tonnes waste/month. (UG2 and
Merensky reef mined) using various mining methods ideal for a
narrow tabular ore body. Total workforce of about 4500 people
contributing about R800m profit to Lonmin annually. Operating
budget of nearly R1bn. Did also frequently manage the Deep
Operations as 4.1 acting senior mine manager(K3# and Rowland#)
– about 45% of Lonmin reef tonnes then with nearly 10000 staff.
Left for in-house promotion.
• Start 2010 - end 2011 Senior manager mining optimisation
Lonmin and also acting Head of Mining Lonmin(surface mining
included) and carried a 4.1 appointment similar to that of General
Managers across the mining industry in RSA. These roles
managed training, technical services, business improvement,
explosives management, best practices, security, safety and
emergency and disaster management. Positions occupied till end
2011. Left for international mining exposure opportunity outside
the RSA and also diamond mining experience. Also a more senior
position.
• Jan 2012 - March 2013 got the opportunity to gain international
experience and also experience in the surface diamond mining
field - Head of Business Optimization and Mining and Safety for
Namdeb and part of the GMT(executive team) – experienced
unpredicted problems related to workpermit for my double-
graduate teacher wife still residing in the RSA with my children,
forcing me to return to the RSA
• MD of consultancy - Apr 2013 to current - mining consulting and
business improvement consulting and new safety products
development work in the RSA and Namibia. Companies like
