19. Academic History
• During my time at school I was able to achieve 9 GCSEs consisting of Core,
Additional and Further Additional Science, Spanish, Statistics, History, Geography
and the two main Maths and English GCSEs. At the time of doing these GSCEs I
was unsure of what I wanted to do later in life and so the focus of my choices was
to give be a wide range of possibilities for what I may want to do in the future.
However, this lead to me not picking any subjects that directly correlated to what I
now want to do at university, which is to work in creative writing and animation.
However, I feel that my time spent on subjects like History and Geography has
allowed me to learn things that could assist me in creative writing in terms of
content as there are many interesting details that I may wish to incorporate into
my own work. Additionally, many of these subjects involved long-writing in the
exams, and so my time spent practicing these has helped with how I can structure
sentences together to make a point stand out, which could help in creative writing
for making a smooth flow to the piece. The two English GCSEs were useful for
researching existing texts and learning about different techniques that were used
and why. Learning these techniques has allowed me to practice incorporating the
many different factors of the work we had looked at into my own writing that I did
during the Language Exam.
20. Current Study
• Throughout this course I had worked with various programmes each of which have allowed me to
practice with different techniques for creating and editing my work. By using Adobe Photoshop I
have been able to create various animations using the Timeline tool ranging from video games to
openings for a TV show of my own creation. These different contexts of animation have allowed me
to practice various different techniques and movements whilst improving on the fluidity of what I
create. Through these animations and other live action projects that I have worked on in the year I
have refined my skills with audio, using an online software called Beepbox to create audio for my
video game-esque products whilst using Adobe Audition to edit different audio pieces together
whilst altering different factors of them to create Audio books and other pieces. Each of my
productions throughout the course has required Adobe Premiere to edit, which I have learned
many new features and techniques of whilst working on these projects.
• I thoroughly enjoyed working on these projects, especially the ones involving animation. As my
FMP was directly related to my own work that I have spent time on outside of education it feels
more personal and so I particularly enjoyed working on it. I want to refine this work more whilst
bringing my own story and characters to life, and so this FMP has inspired me to continue to create
animations related to my own work whilst improving my skills in animating as well as editing audio.
I eventually want to be able to create audio of my own and so I hope to be able to create projects
where everything is of my own creation instead of being forced to use copyright free music to
accompany my animations.
21. The Future
• My end goal for a job is to direct and personally work on a series of my own
creation. I want to have experience in a variety of fields to allow me to have input
in as many different aspects of the work as possible, hence why I want to be able
to create my own audio alongside animating and writing. Entering this field can be
extremely difficult to do without any connections in the industry, which university
will be of great help for due to the Sandwich year that many have for courses
relating to this line of work. During a Sandwich year I would spend time working in
the industry to gain experience with the equipment and schedules used whilst also
being able to meet people in positions similar to those I hope to work in in the
future. This will allow me to gain greater insight as to what I would be doing and if
the position would be right for me whilst also gaining a connection to someone in
the industry that I can use in the future to help me to get work placements.
• Additionally, going to university will help me to gain more experience working in a
group, something which I will frequently be doing whilst working in the industry. I
will learn how to create realistic deadlines as well as how to properly distribute
work amongst a group.
22. Outside College
• Outside of college I have been able to spend time doing voluntary work at a Veterinaries. Whilst
this doesn’t directly relate to what I want to do in the future, I have been able to learn how to
perform tasks in a high pressure environment whilst also spending time working in groups with
people to complete tasks. Both of these factors are important for working both at university as well
as in the animation industry as being able to complete tasks to a high quality in a relatively short
deadline is an important skill to have when having to create multiple animations. My time spent
working in groups with people who have different skills to me will be useful when distributing
different tasks should I need to do any group-work at university.
• I have also been able to hone my group skills in the jobs that I have worked, which include being a
kitchen-hand at a farm shop café whilst working as a waiter at a pub under two different
ownerships. I have been able to gain experience in working as a team with people working different
jobs whilst also catering to clients to ensure their happiness with the product being sold to them.
These skills all directly translate over to working in the animation industry, including university.
• My time spent as captain of a football team has allowed me to refine my ability to distribute work
amongst a group whilst keeping morale high and setting targets to achieve. This will help when
working on group projects with people who have particular skills targeted towards different work
e.g. 2D animation and 3D animation. I will be able to ensure that I can keep a steady workflow
within this group.
• During this time I completed my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, in which I was able to develop
my ability to work independently in terms of preparation for the event, as well as in a team during
the walking, cooking and setting up of tents.
23. Conclusion
• It is important that I am able to go to university to refine my skills in
animating, writing and other subjects directly related to working in
the animation industry so that I can be someone who stands out
amongst a crowd as the choice for working somewhere. By going to
university I will be able to work with new software that I don’t have
access to at home or college whilst also spending time working on
different styles of animation. Going to university will help me to
create a high quality portfolio alongside achieving grades that will
allow me to stand out to people in the industry and greatly improve
my chances of getting jobs.
• I believe the work that I have done within education has allowed
me to refine my skills in terms of writing, animating and producing
audio whilst my time spent working different jobs as well as
voluntary work and acting as captain of a football team have refined
my ability to work in a team and perform tasks under pressure to a
high quality.
24. Introduction
• I want to study an animation course or an animation & screenwriting
course so that I can improve on my skills in both mentioned areas. By
developing my skills with music in my own time I hope to be able to create
high quality pieces that don’t require the use of external copyright free
audio. Additionally, I want to be able to create interesting narratives told
through 2D animation that I can continue to develop into the future.
• I want to go to university so that I can refine my skills in animating and
screenwriting whilst also improving on my audio development alongside. I
feel that the university environment would be the best for learning these
new techniques as I will have access to different software and hardware as
well as the opportunity to meet with people who have experience in the
industry. Additionally, living away from home will allow me to become
more independent, thus making the transition from moving out from
home and getting a full-time job less jarring.
