1TOPIC
1.1 MUSIC
The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962, it is considered
to be one of the most iconic rock bands in history. It is important to today´s culture
because they are still united and they are still heard today and they have been a very
big influence in today´s music. Some songs of the Rolling Stones are related to the
Vietnam War like “Gimme Shelter” or “Paint it, Black”.
For example”Gimme Shelter” was released in 1969 when the United Sates was at the
peak involvement in the Vietnam War. The artists were trying to warn Americans about
the consequences of the war. This song captures the fear of American people in a
dangerous time. We can see it at the lyrics where it says “if I don’t get some shelter,
lord, I’m gonna fade away,” “Paint it black” was not written about the Vietnam War but
later the song was used on some movies and videos about the war.
The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. With
members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they
became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential act of the rock era, so
that´s why it is so important to today’s culture. They are probably the most
revolutionary and creative band in history although they were just in active for 10 years,
from 1960 to 1970. The Beatles changed the way people listened to popular music and
experienced its role in their lives. One song of the Beatles related to the Cold War is
“Back to the USSR”. This song talks about the Soviet Union although England is an
anti-communist country, so they were highly criticized for this. Everyone still inspires on
this band although there have already passed 5 decades since they were in active.
1.2 ADVERTISEMENT
The advertisements show the interests that had the people of the sixties about
products, sales or events. The sixties were a decade that had a lot of social, political
and cultural changes more impacted under the young people as we can see in the
advertisement the music had big influence on them, the sixties were a time in which
increase “The beatlemania” that made the pressing social issues and debates pushed
aside temporally. The war of Vietnam cause around the world fear therefore in the
sixties had a big anti-war movement in the united states consisted of a number of
independent interests as the movement's ideals spread beyond college campuses so
many people was opposed to the war because they thought that the united states was
not prepared economically and the thought that was immoral. In the sixteen the society
was joint for the same cause as we can see the big movement they created during the
sixteen.
1.3 INVENTIONS
The Sixties have been described by historians as the ten years having the most
significant changes in history and obviously these changes have powerful reasons. The
60‘s were a decade once again dominated by a war, the war of Vietnam and several
Cold War, even though it wasn’t a world war the effects were still felt throughout the
world. The sixties where the start of showing how the people can effect politics through
the power of “peaceful” demonstrations, the younger people were the driving force
because with education comes empowerment and with empowerment comes a voice,

and in the 60’s students learned how to use that voice, and that voice were the
amazing inventions.
For example, the valium was a much sold pill, because it was a pill for the anxiety and
a war is a more than enough reason to be worry about what the world is going through.
Another example is the policy entrepreneurs in the United States when they decided to
establish a satellite communication system open to all countries in the world. This is as
a response to Cold War competition with the Soviet Union. The communications
satellite has a lot impact during the 60’s, helping an improvement to communicate with
others, in this case that is during the war, and people can communicate easily and
quickly.
2 CONCLUSIONS
2.1 ABOUT THE 60’S
José Arias:
My favorite subject from the 60’s is the music because this is the time where the best
bands in history were created like Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd
and more. I found the 60’s to be a time where social media started to play a big role in
society; you can find a lot of social media related to the context of that time period. Also
I think that in the 60’s people started to be more creative.
Amy Villavicencio:
I think advertisement is the topic that I like most. As you can visualize, the photo
woman has always been an “object” for the man. 60’s women were presented as to be
the perfect wife and home worker ready to serve the husband in any desire. Now days
woman is also see as an object among society, but the differences is that today is
seem as sexual object. This is very interesting for me because during 50’s and 60’s
advertisement is consider the genesis of looking for the woman as an n object.
Lissette Campuzano:
The 60’s was the start of Pop music. This type of music became controlled by new
young "vocal"-groups, taking their power from a combination of the performer's
charisma along with the songwriting talents. Popular music of the United States in the
60s was tied up with, opposing certain ideas, influenced by the sexual revolution,
feminism, Black Power and environmentalism. This trend took place in a tumultuous
period of massive public unrest in the United States which consisted of the Cold War,
Vietnam War, and Civil Rights Movement. My favorite topic of this project is the music
because through the music of the 6o’s you can see a change in the society and culture
5. 5
of the U.S. you see how artists and singer like the Beatles and Bob Dylan where
influencing the younger generation into being more open minded.
