Fire and Fire Prevention

We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum
Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

Fire
• Here substances combine chemically with oxygen
from the air giving out bright light, heat and
smoke
• They are capable of harming men, machinery,
material, property and environment mercilessly
• A naked fire is fire in lighting, live fire like burning
charcoal, lighted paper etc which are generally
the root cause for the origin and spread of many
fires
We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum
Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

Groups of fire
Fire can be divided into two groups:
• Wanted fire

• Unwanted fire

We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum
Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

Actions required to be activated on sensing fire
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

Cry out loudly to draw attention of the people for fire
prevention
Move along to a switch off the power
Choose the right type of extinguisher and attack the fire
Call for in-house fire station
Rescue the injured and rush them to the nearest hospital
Resuscitate the fire-affected person/s who fell unconscious
Apply artificial respiration or other necessary first aid
methods to save the life of the affected persons
Call up and intimate the police and also the inspector of
factories
We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum
Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

Steps to be taken immediately after the fire
•

•
•
•

•

Intimate immediately to the Judicial or Sub-Divisional
Magistrate in case of any casualties
Call up and intimate the insurance company with whom
subjects like assets, machinery and equipment and
people are insured
Intimate the family members of the fire affected
person/s immediately
Also intimate banks in case of loss to the
mortgaged/hypothecated goods/machinery/property
Obtain FAC for claiming insurance

Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

Pre-cautionary measures to prevent and control
fire accidents
• Display charts have to placed showing the type of fire and kind of
extinguisher to be used at all conspicuous locations in the plant or at
the work place
• Posters with slogans, signs, indicators etc need to be displayed at all
conspicuous locations, to create better awareness among the
people
• People working in different departments, along with security
personnel need to be trained in fire fighting at periodic intervals
• Smoke detectors and fire alarms need to be installed at every
sensitive area of the plant
• Life validity of the extinguishers and re-filling etc precautionary
measures need to be inspected at periodic schedules
We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum
Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

Preventive measures to prevent fire accidents
•
•
•
•

Utmost care should be taken while handling and storing
flammable liquids and liquefied gases
Easily combustible materials like curtains, gunny bags
etc, shall be kept at a safe distance from all types of
naked fires
Coal and oil items should be stored in properly
constructed bins of incombustible material
Workmen’s clothing etc that are contaminated with oil
and grease lubricants shall be kept in separate rooms in
well ventilated metal cupboards

Regular cleanliness, good house-keeping and immediate
disposal of rubbish, etc. should be undertaken as an
indirect fire prevention measure
“Closing time-check” of the place of operation by the
people working therein would help fire prevention
It is further recommended to identify and designate
“Smoking zone” and “No smoking zone” in the industrial
plant
Fire prevention is largely a practice of care, discipline and
habits, which should automatically suggest themselves
to everyone
Great care should be exercised in the use of and also
installation of electrical wiring and fittings

We Learn – A Continuous Learning Forum
Welingkar’s Distance Learning Division

• Special care should be taken that customers, guests
and also casual visitors do not attempt to smoke in
the prohibited areas
• While handling and using LPG gas cylinder, careful
storing and handling should be ensured by keeping
cylinders in upright position
• Fire shall be lighted by matchstick only to the purpose
• Care should be taken so that appliances like stove and
lamps etc, use only the right fuel for which the
appliance is designed
• Cooking houses shall be provided only in rooms with
roofs and walls of incombustible materials
