This document provides instructions for adding course readings from library databases to a D2L course. It outlines finding the article citation and verifying the library's subscription to the database. Faculty are then directed to locate the full text article in the database and copy the URL link. The link is then pasted into D2L when adding new content or a file, with the option selected to open in a new window. Contact information is provided for librarians who can help answer any questions about the process.
Some of your course readings may be available online through the library databases. Here’s how you find out.Start with the citation. Identify the Journal title, volume, issue and year where the article was published.
To find out if the library has access to this journal, start at the Library home page (http://www.uwp.edu/departments/library) and search for the title of the journal on the Journals tab.
The results will open in a new browser tab. The “Available from” information will tell you what years of coverage the library subscribes to. Every journal is different. If your article was published within the time frame shown here, you should be able to access it.In the case of our example, the article was published in 2013. The coverage shown on this screen is “Available from 2003”. That means the library subscribes to volumes of this journal published from 2003-Present. Our article should be here!Click the database name (EBSCOhost Academic Search Complete) to find the article.
When the database opens, find and select the Issue date that corresponds to your citation. Our example article was published in 2013 - Volume 16, Issue 1. In this database, the issue is listed in the menu on the right hand side of the screen. Clicking the issue name will bring you to a list of all the articles published in this issue.
Find your article in the list of results and click on the PDF Full Text link to open the article.
When the article opens, look for the link icon to the right of the article.
A permalink box will appear along the top of the article. This link will allow your students to access the article from on-and off-campus. Right click into the box to copy the URL.
Back in your D2L course, go to the Content area and choose Add Content > New File from the drop-down menu.
