6. Analysis of Similar Documentaries
These documentary’s have all been similar the the documentary that I have decided to
make. All of which follow individuals or a group of people who are fighting in a war,
are war survivors or were born and raised during a war and have now escaped. All of
these documentaries have been created to allow the audience to see the different
things that people have to go through, it allows the audience to feel sympathy for
those who have had to escape from a country due to war.
All of these documentaries are similar to the documentary that I want to film because it
uses interviews to allow the individuals to tell their story, I believe that this is a good
way for the audience to get a firsthand story from an eye-witness.
Born and Raised in a Concentration Camp is a documentary which matched the way I
wanted to film mine because it interviews a young man who is telling his story. He is
unable to speak English and subtitles are used to translate, this a style that I would
need to use.

during the war.

10. Aim of My Documentary
• To inform individuals about the war in Kosovo
and the impact it had on the Kosovan people.
• To allow the audience to get an insight on what
is like to survive a war.
• To allow the audience to understand why some
people refugees came to be refugees.
11. Target Audience
Primary Target Audience – 18 to 27 year olds
Reason:
At this age I believe they should already know about some of the worlds
wars, however from my research I have been able to see that many
people around this age group have no idea about the war at all, even
though Britain played a big role in it.
This age group would find a lot more interest in this historical type of
documentary.
Secondary Target Audience – 28 to 40 year olds
12. Primary Research
Questions:
Did you know about the war in Kosovo? YES/NO. If so, where did
you hear about it? ______________________
Why do you think there are many Kosovan refugees in the
UK?______________
How many people do you think died during this
war?______________
Which countries was the war between?_____________
Did Britain play a part in this war?_______________
Did Kosovo win the war? YES/NO
All of the answers that I received from the 24
people that I handed the questionnaire out to
allowed me to see that there is clear lack of
knowledge on this topic area.
• 16 out of the 24 said they didn’t even know
that there was a war
13. Locations
Location Reasons
Park This scenery would represents freedom
which would allow the audience to see
that the individuals are now free from war.
Library In this scene there will be a Kosovan flag
which is relevant to the story, there will
also be many Kosovan books placed in the
scene to set the scene.
Riverside This would represent peace and
tranquility for the audience which reflects
the individuals as being at peace. However
the wind would represent their emotions
around the subject.
14. Channel and Distribution
I think that my documentary would be best suited to BBC One because this is a
channel that I am able to reach a large amount of my target audience. I think
that my documentary would appeal to a lot of people due to the fact that there
are not many documentaries out there that are very similar to mine.
75% of the UK's populations tune in to watch BBC One each week, this would
mean that if my documentary was on this channel it would ensure that a huge
amount of my target audience would see it. This way it could reach my primary
and my secondary target audience.
BBC One's audience stated that this channel brings the nation together and
presents them with programmes about cultural events and allows the nation to
understand different cultures, this is why I believe my documentary would suit
perfectly on this channel.
15. Commercial Viability
These are all of the costs that I believe I would need to ensure that the production of my
documentary is funded properly. However I have been able to device different ways to
ensure that I would not need to spend as much money. This could be things like hiring
someone who would like to go into Directing to direct my film, this would mean that they are
able to say that they have gained experience from this – It would also mean that I do not
have to pay them or I may have to pay them a minimal amount of money.
16. Funding my Documentary
I would need to figure out a way to
fund my documentary. I believe that a
good way for my receive funding for
my short documentary would be to
sign up to a website such as
INDIEGOGO, this allows me to raise
as much money as I need for this
documentary.
However I could also use an
organisation such as Frameline to
help fund my documentary. They have
different categories of funding, I would
need to devise which category my
documentary would fit into and apply
for funding.
17. Legal Issues
Here are some of the
issues I must consider
when making this
documentary and the
what I could do to
avoid this or to
minimize the effect
that it has on my
work.
