Presentation to Journey to Leadership
There are many authors on leadership – what is important is not their lists, ie. 7 habits, or 6 secrets, but the action that their message inspires the reader to move on
Table discussion – Who do you think of when you think of a leader Share some of the examples
Table discussion – many people probably came up with political leaders, religious leaders, and people in formal positions of power – but other examples included personal examples of leaders.
The importance of leadership in our Catholic School Board You are the leaders – you are the ones that make a difference - We have Julian Hanlon who is clearly a leader based on position but then his personal attributes are what make him an effective / outstanding leader - we have teachers, custodians, Eas, students, administrators, office administrators and each of these defines a position but not necessarily a leadership position – but each of these can be a leader, and each of you can make a difference in the life of a colleague or in the life of a student – leadership is a potential in each of us and it’s up to you to decide whether or not to act upon it - Very few people can be the Director so how do you become a leader in your role?
This is a great quote – if you focus on one person at a time,- you are answering God’s calling to be a leader in the Catholic school system
Most of you are familiar with the story of the starfish – please reflect what this means to you – At your tables – share examples of a starfish that you saved – Can anyone think of a starfish that is sitting there waiting for someone to care, for someone to save just that one?
Table discussion – Share an example of a “starfish” you have saved, or a “starfish” that you are aware of that needs saving
Why are you in education? If it is for retirement then it will be very difficult for you to make a difference as a Catholic leader – extrinsic monetary rewards don’t usually result in effective leaders – it may result in positional power and positional leadership – but will anyone listen?
This is why I’m in education It starts off very basic and innocent and then we realize – “Oh my God – these kids are all in my care” – I can really mess them up!
Lets watch George Bush What to you makes a good leader? – table discussion
Table discussion – What makes a good leader?
As leaders – you choose to lead or you choose not to lead Remember, with positional leadership comes scrutiny at all times With Catholic leadership and the realization that each of you can make a difference you need to realize that others are watching you – colleagues, supervisors, students, parents – what do they see? At tables discuss an example of someone in a leadership position and how a decision they may have made isolated them and resulted in others not really wanting to follow them anymore?
Table discussion – What makes a good leader?
Why would someone follow you? Would someone?
Here is a clip of how the staff respond to the leader?
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink! What does this mean to you Examples in your work? How can this be changed to “leading by example?”
What qualities do you want in a leader?
Integrity What does walk the talk really mean?
Hope LBP and a trip up North Our students come from all different backgrounds and challenges Many of our staff come from difficult childhoods etc. – What do you do to bring hope?
Lets have a look at our friend the Nightmare Boss to see how he’s doing?
Finish with these quotes – hopefully they speak to you Remember – in your call to Catholic leadership – remember the star fish – you do make a difference in the life of “one”
