NCompass Live - June 7, 2017 http://nlc.nebraska.gov/ncompasslive/ Project staff and partners for Library Innovation Studios: Transforming Rural Communities project will provide an introduction to the upcoming project and discuss the impending application/selection process. Eligible Nebraska public libraries are those with a legal service area of less than 25,000 and are accredited. The deadline for the first application cycle—that will identify between twelve and twenty participating libraries—is scheduled for July 10, 2017. The balance of the participating libraries are expected to be selected in an application process that will take place sometime in 2018. The Nebraska Library Commission (NLC) along with partners University of Nebraska—Lincoln, Nebraska Innovation Studio, Nebraska Extension, and Regional Library Systems, are excited about the project, recently awarded a National Leadership Grant of $530,732 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The project will begin July 1, 2017 and conclude June 30, 2020. The project uses Library Innovation Studios (makerspaces) hosted by libraries to support community engagement and participatory learning experiences by providing access to technological and innovative learning tools not readily accessible locally. This strengthening of the maker culture in is expected to stimulate creativity, innovation and the exchange of ideas to facilitate entrepreneurship, skills development, and local economic development. Over the last 5 years the Connected Intelligence Centre has been developing and piloting an automated feedback tool for academic writing (AcaWriter), working closely with academics across several faculties. The research portal documents how educators and students engage with this kind of AI, and what we’ve learnt about integrating it into teaching and assessment. In May, AcaWriter was launched to all students along with an information portal. Now we want to start upskilling academics, tutors and learning technologists, in a monthly session to give you the chance to learn about AcaWriter, and specifically, good practices for integrating it into your subject. CIC can support you, and we hope you may be interested in co-designing publishable research. AcaWriter handles several different ‘genres’ of writing, including reflective writing (e.g. a Reflective Essay; Reflective Blogs/Journals on internships/work-placements) and analytical writing (e.g. Argumentative Essays; Research Abstracts & Introductions). This briefing will demo AcaWriter, and show it can be embedded in student activities. We hope this sparks ideas for your own teaching, which we can discuss in more detail.

Peter Kraker, Michela Vignoli & Rainer Bachleitner give an overview of an innovative dissemination framework & present the OpenUP Innovative Dissemination Toolbox. Workshop title: Innovative dissemination practices & Altmetrics Workshop abstact: The goal of the workshop is to further the understanding of innovative dissemination practices in open science and their relationship with altmetrics. In the first part of the workshop, OpenUP project researchers will give an overview of an innovative dissemination framework. The framework describes good practices and gives recommendations on how to create a successful research dissemination strategy beyond traditional academic dissemination. A special focus will lie on how to reach target audiences beyond the research community (e.g. business or the general public). Participants will be able to test the framework and a toolbox based on their dissemination needs and to give feedback in a discussion that involves the perspective of all stakeholders of dissemination and assessment (researchers and research organizations, funders, policy makers, journalists, practitioners & businesses etc.). In the second part, we will present a taxonomy linking channels of dissemination and altmetrics indicators. In between, we will present best practice examples of innovative dissemination. In Spring 2017, the University of Michigan Library completed an engagement with brightspot strategy, consultants who worked with our academic user community and staff to design a service framework and space strategy to guide our organization's work into the future. This holistic framework and philosophy have the potential to transform our large organization's approach to designing and delivering aligned and impactful user experiences. A Service Design Task Force was formed to take this strategy and begin to design pilots and prototypes for new and evolved services and spaces, with a particular focus on enhancing the library's ability to partner around consultation, digital scholarship, and designing for emergence. The three members of the Task Force represent expertise in learning and teaching services, user experience, space design, discovery services, and web technologies. Our goal in this work is to transform our organization's capacity to design, deliver, and iterate high quality virtual and physical services in 21st-century learning and research environments within the library through user and staff engagement, rapid prototyping, and design thinking. In our presentation, the Task Force members will share current and future strategies for engaging the organization in this work, including tools and formats for design and discussion that have supported our work with the library community. We'll also discuss next steps for piloting and prototyping new service ideas in existing library spaces in order to inform future space transformations.

Slides from presentation at CHI2015: Paper Title: Designing for Citizen Data Analysis: A Cross-Sectional Case Study of a Multi-Domain Citizen Science Platform Abstract: Designing an effective and sustainable citizen science (CS) project requires consideration of a great number of factors. This makes the overall process unpredictable, even when a sound, user-centred design approach is followed by an experienced team of UX designers. Moreover, when such systems are deployed, the complexity of the resulting interactions challenges any attempt to generalisation from retrospective analysis. In this paper, we present a case study of the largest single platform of citizen driven data analysis projects to date, the Zooniverse. By eliciting, through structured reflection, experiences of core members of its design team, our grounded analysis yielded four sets of themes, focusing on Task Specificity, Community Development, Task Design and Public Relations and Engagement. For each, we propose a set of design claims (DCs), drawing comparisons to the literature on crowdsourcing and online communities to contextualise our findings.

The application of technology in museums continues to evolve rapidly. Museums of all shapes and sizes are seeing a growing digital play on the gallery floor, with systems increasingly connected. There is a corresponding evolution in approaches for managing this technology footprint and ensuring sustainability. Recent museum launches and "reboots" highlight new approaches, though all museums are grappling with these challenges, and many are developing innovative solutions. Museums are exploring diverse approaches, including new open source projects such as Nodel. These approaches are rooted in varied and overlapping drivers. This professional forum invites you to explore the needs and the range of approaches in managing exhibition technology, using examples of deployments as a way to surface the broader challenges for the sector. Presented at the Research Support Community Day by Natasha Simons (Program Leader for Skills, Policy and Resources, Australian National Data Service) An increasing number of scholarly publishers and journals are implementing policies and procedures that require published articles to be accompanied by the underlying research data. These policies are an important part of the shift toward reproducible research and have been shown to influence researchers’ willingness to share research data to varying extents. However journal data availability policies are highly idiosyncratic, vary in strength from encouraging to mandating data sharing, and are often difficult to interpret. This makes it challenging for researchers to comply, editors to introduce and research support staff to assist. This presentation examined why and how more scholarly publishers/journals are introducing data availability policies and explore the differences in journal data sharing policies, referring to examples. It outlined the challenges of current data policies, what is expected of various stakeholders, and reflect on efforts in Australia to engage stakeholders in conversation to improve data policies including 2017 Social Sciences and Health and Medical roundtables. It concluded with an update on international collaborations that are helping to facilitate wider adoption of clear, consistent policies for publishing research data.

I had the honour of presenting my reflections on the autobiography of Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, titled "Uncommon Grace." As someone deeply invested in documentation and history, I found Professor Adewole's decision to narrate his journey from humble beginnings to occupying one of the highest offices in the land both inspiring and invaluable. In this eloquently written memoir, Professor Adewole provides a comprehensive account of his life, from his ancestral roots to his time as Minister of Health in Nigeria. The unique aspect of this autobiography is that he portrayed himself authentically without taking the help of third-party narratives, which is often seen in accounts of high-ranking officials. His upbringing was greatly influenced by his father's commitment to education. He became a prominent figure in advocating for the rights of the underprivileged through trade unionism. His story is one of unwavering determination, resilience, and faith. His experiences, including both successes and struggles, provide priceless lessons on leadership, perseverance, and the alignment of personal values with public service. While reading "Uncommon Grace," I was struck by the deep leadership lessons that are embedded within its chapters. Professor Adewole stresses the importance of inclusivity, servant leadership, and planning, which are all highly relevant in today's complex world. His commitment to accountability, as well as his primary responsibility as a researcher, serves as a guiding light for aspiring leaders across various disciplines. During his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, he led with visionary leadership and transformative impact. His accomplishments have been meticulously documented in the book, which can serve as a blueprint for rejuvenating institutions and promoting academic excellence. In the latter part of his autobiography, Professor Adewole shares his experiences as a Minister, detailing the challenges he faced while serving the public with integrity and courage. His reflections on the complexities of public service, coupled with his commitment to the well-being of the nation, offer practical insights for policymakers and citizens alike. I have carefully read "Uncommon Grace" and it is more than just a memoir. It is a timeless book that is hard to put down once you start reading. While intellectuals may continue to debate whether uncommon grace was made possible by uncommon preparation or the other way around, I applaud Professor Adewole for sharing his ideas, knowledge, and experience with the public. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Yesterday in Lagos, I had the honour of delivering a lecture titled “If this Giant Must Walk; Manifesto for a New Nigeria“ at the Inaugural Memorial Lecture of Prince Emeka Obasi, founder and publisher of Business Hallmark and the inspirational figure behind the Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre - promoters of the revered Zik Leadership and Governance Awards. My lecture focused on the challenges of nation-building in Nigeria and how we can approach them in a way that promotes progress and unity. I discussed the many sources of concern about our country’s future prospects, including violent conflicts, revisionist contestations of the Amalgamation Act of 1914, discontent with the Nigerian economy, and dysfunctions in the federal system. Central to my lecture was the call to address these challenges by crafting a new manifesto for Nigeria. This manifesto, I proposed, should champion integrity, compassion, character, competence, and commitment to national unity and progress within a framework of democratic governance and cultural diversity. I firmly believe that by doing so, we can guide Nigeria to stride forward with pride and purpose. I want to thank the Board and Management of the Public Policy Forum for their kind invitation to speak at this important event and for their commitment to promoting public policy research and analysis in Nigeria. My gratitude also to the late Prince Emeka Obasi, a true inspiration and a builder of bridges across divides, for his contributions to the country. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
