3. ABOUT MYSELF AND UBC’S BLOCKCHAIN PROJECT
• Graduate student at UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies
• Dr Vicki Lemieux and myself run UBC’s new blockchain knowledge platform called
Blockchain@UBC
• Platform will investigate means by which archival science can benefit from the
development of blockchain solutions
• It is currently hosting meetups and, next year, plans to carry out research with a view to
creating a sandbox blockchain
• We are looking to run a workshop on privacy, security, trust and blockchain solutions as
part of the 26th ICCN conference July 31-Aug. 3, 2017 in Vancouver:

6. HYPERLEDGER AS A SERVICE?
• The Hyperledger project is an open source collaborative effort created to advance
cross-industry blockchain technologies
• A blockchain is a peer-to-peer distributed ledger forged by consensus, combined with
a system for “smart contracts” and other assistive technologies
• Hyperledger combines dynamism of new blockchain applications with the networks
and interoperability that come with open source collaborations
• Hyperledger is involved with these community projects: Iroha, Sawtooth Lake, Fabric
• Best role Hyperledger can play is as a trusted source of Open Source software…
advance industry goals of distributed ledger and smart contracts

7. CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
• Blockchain is at the same stage where the Web was in 1996
• Momentum around Bitcoin, Ethereum, commercial blockchains
• Improve consensus mechanisms for permissioned and permissionless chains
• Debates about Bitcoin block size and DAO look like technical debates but are
actually different visions of cryptocurrencies’ future governance and role in
society
