A Definition of Smart Cities India The purpose of the Smart Cities Mission is to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local area development and harnessing technology. Area- based development will transform existing areas (retrofit and redevelop), including slums, into better planned ones, thereby improving liveability of the whole City. Application of Smart Solutions will enable cities to use technology, information and data to improve infrastructure and services. Source: smartcities.gov.in

Smart City Program – off and running • 30 people migrate to Indian cities every minute – 43k per day and 15.7m per year – and growing • 843m in Indian cities by 2050 – now it is 350m • Aim100 - new, retrofitted, satellite -PPP Model/relax FDI • EARLY WINNERS Germany 3, USA 3, Spain 1, Singapore 1, Japan 3

Who is making the decisions? • Centre – The Indian Government of Narendra Modi • State + Cities • Advisory Firms appointed for each city • 37 Consulting firms appointed so far (E&Y etc and Indian) • WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR? • Finance and Capability (could be transport, building, management, waste/water, education, IT – or combinations)

  7. 7. LET’S BUILD A WINNING MODEL • Create a consortium to deliver end-to-end solutions • Identify targets and find Indian partners • Include BYO Funding • Ensure Indian partners are also winning • Obtain Australian Government support • Promote an overall plan to the Government of India
