The Reactance Theory
In the Movie “Hall
Pass”!
2.
3. Reactance Theory- is a motivational reaction to offers, persons, rules, or
regulations that threaten or eliminate specific behavioral freedoms
~ occurs when a person feels that someone or something is
taking away his or her choices or limiting the range of
alternatives.
4.
5. Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis)
are best friends as are their wives, Maggie (Jenna
Fischer) and Grace (Christina Applegate).
Rick and Fred are unhappy with their married
lives and start missing the old days when they
were single.
6. Realizing this, their wives talk to their friend
Dr. Lucy (Joy Behar) and decide to give them a
"Hall Pass":
A week off from marriage during which they
can have sex and flirt with other women.
7. ~Fred(left) and Rick(right) quickly
realize it is harder than they
thought meeting women.
~Both are to prideful to quit.
~Both are missing their wives.
-
8. The Theory Fred and Rick followed for a week!
~There are "free behaviors"
individuals perceive and can take
part in at any given moment.
~For a behavior to be free, the
individual must have the relevant
physical and psychological
abilities to partake in it.
~ As well as know they can engage
in it at the moment, or in the near
future.
9. My Interruptions
• When you tell someone they
can’t have something they
usually will want it more.
• Know one likes to be told
“no”
10. Effects of Reactance
• When a person becomes aware of
reactance, they will feel a higher level of
self-direction in relationship to their own
behavior.
• In other words, they will feel that if they
are able to do what they want, then they
do not have to do what they do not want.
11. Effects of Reactance
• In this case when the freedom is in question,
that person alone is the director of their own
behavior. (Ex. Rick and Fred)
