The Severn Estuary Forum is a key annual event in its eighth year and hosted by the Severn Estuary Partnership: an independent, estuary-wide initiative, involving all those interested in the management of the estuary, from planners to port authorities, fishermen to farmers.
This year’s Forum was opened by the Lord Mayor of Gloucester and supported by CIWEM. It focussed on a number of diverse topics, including the upper estuary; renewable energy possibilities; a review of the Severn Estuary Flood Risk Management Strategy; an overview of the operations and maintenance of the Severn River Crossings; Local Enterprise Partnerships; The Bristol Deep Sea Container Terminal; proposals for a Severnside Airport and Fisheries amongst others.
These engaging and exciting events are intended for all interested in learning about the latest research and policy developments dealing with the Severn Estuary and its future, and always guarantee a lively and informative day of presentations and talks. They offer a unique opportunity to learn from others, share ideas and participate in the management of the Severn Estuary.

LIFE+ is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental and
nature conservation projects throughout the EU.
Natura 2000 (N2K) is an EU wide network of nature protection areas
established under the 1992 Habitats Directive (SAC) and 1979 Birds
Directive (SPA), designated for important features.
5. Aspirations of the Programmes
•
Significant progress towards favourable condition.
•
Facilitate improved delivery of management.
•
Obtain improved levels of funding.
•
Integrate Natura 2000 into other financial instruments and
policy areas.
•
Identify key gaps in evidence and management.
•
Gather best available knowledge and gain support from
stakeholder representatives.

10. Severn Estuary Improvement Plan
Improvement Plan for the Severn Estuary Natura 2000 site will
be produced working with NRW which will identify:
– issues and risks (pressures & threats) impacting on
and/or threatening the condition of the site
– measures (actions & funding) to address them
– how much it will cost and potential funding sources
– key stakeholders who need to take action
11. Severn Estuary Improvement Plan
• Management scheme will be used
• Work closely with representatives
• Include both SAC and SPA features
The Severn Estuary supports a wide range of habitats and species of International importance for nature conservationThe site was designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2005 for the 5 habitats and 3 species in the top box:SPA or Special Protection Area was Designated in 1995. Severn is one most important estuaries in the UK for overwintering wildfowl & waders. The estuary regularly supports over 20,000 birds, with over 80,000 individual waterfowl recorded in the winter seasons. The site is also designated as a Ramsar site, the features of which overlap with the SAC and SPA: and there are also SSSIs: the country's very best wildlife and geological sites. There are 3 within the Estuary. Severn Estuary, Bridgwater Bay and Steepholm. For the purpose of the LIFE programmes we will be focussing on SAC and SPA features.Designated under the EC Directive 93/43/EEC on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora, for their areas supporting rare, endangered or threatened species of plant or animal (other than birds) and important habitats. The estuaries feature also covers: hard substrate habitats including eel grass beds, & assemblage of fish species & waterfowl species The intertidal mudflats and sandflats, saltmarsh, shingle and rocky shore habitats bordering the estuary, are also protected within the SPA as they support the bird species. (High densities of invertebrates are an important food source). Over winter the area regularly supports: Bewick’s Swan , Gadwall, European white-fronted goose, Dunlin, Shelduck, Redshank .Assemblage qualification - over winter regularly supports 84,317 waterfowl including: Wigeon, Teal, Pintail, Pochard, Tufted duck, Ringed Plover, Grey Plover, Curlew, Whimbrel, Spotted Redshank
What’s involved…how are we going to deliver this strategic thinking…This table and the one on the following slide give you our key outputs, their purpose, and an idea of the timeframes for delivery on the two projectsOur first task was Evidence gathering which ran concurrently and has already been completed on both projects – this has given us a sound evidence base of issues and risks affecting Natura 2000 sites. We’ll look to build on this throughout the projects. We’re currently reviewing and developing measures or mechanisms - we’re looking at how we address our issues and risks and identifying new approaches to improve management and looking at costing these actions and identifying funding sources.
