Never Let Me Go Quote
       Analysis
        Chapter 15
When I think of that moment now, standing with
Tommy in the little side-street about to begin our
search, I feel a warmth welling up through me.
Everything suddenly felt perfect: an hour set
aside, stretching ahead of us, and there wasn’t
a better way to spend it. I had to really hold
myself back from giggling stupidly, or jumping
up and down on the pavement like a little kid.
                                       – Kathy’s narration, pages 168-169

For a second, it even felt like a mistake. The
tape had been the perfect excuse for all this fun.
                                       – Kathy’s narration, page 170

Chapter 15 shows Tommy and Kathy spending some time alone together, and their feelings
are becoming clearer to the reader. Tommy decides to stay behind with Kathy, and suggests
that they look for Kathy’s lost tape. It is revealed that Tommy had known about this for a long
time, and his past actions of trying to find it years ago in Hailsham suggest that he might have
felt something more for her even then. The language that Ishiguro uses in Kathy’s narration
show that she certainly enjoyed the time she spent looking for the tape with Tommy, even
feeling a little disappointed when they actually did find it. While two teenagers beginning to
fully realise their feelings might seem cliché and saccharine, Ishiguro makes it touching. These
are two people who will probably never have a lasting relationship because of the situation that
they are in – a point that is moving, and even tragic.
"Actually Kath, I've
       been thinking about it
      for a while…" - Tommy,
             page 172

Though Tommy had initially rejected the idea of deferrals, flatly
informing Chrissie and Rodney that he never heard of any such thing
at Hailsham, he soon becomes very invested in the idea. Through
Tommy's sudden change in opinion, Ishiguro shows that the clones,
like humans, sometimes tend to believe what they want to,
regardless how far-fetched the idea may seem. Does Tommy truly
believe that clones will be granted a delay in donating organs if they
are in love? Being someone created solely to give away his organs
to others, does he truly believe that other people care if he's in love?
This tendency of "seeing what you want to" also applies to the
"normal" humans. They do not want to believe that the clones are
human, despite what all evidence may point to. In fact, the action of
the clones behaving the same way only further proves that they are
                                 human.
