term for the condition of
an individual or group. A
high level of well-being
means that the
individual’s or group’s
condition is positive.
 The condition goes beyond
physical health; it includes
physical vitality, mental
strength, emotional
strength, social
satisfaction, positive
disposition, a sense of
accomplishment and
personal fulfillment.

 There are different
measurements for wellbeing
eg, Diener’s subjective
wellbeing model, Corey Key’s
flourishing model, Seligman’s
PERMA model, etc.
 Wellbeing and positive
psychology became a major
focus of scientific research
from 1998, when Martin
Seligman became president of
the American Psychological
Association (APA).

Mental Health in Australia
 In Australia during 2007 to 2011,
there was a 54% increase in
psychological injury claims1.
 In that period, of all serious claims
(≥ 1 week off work), 22% were due
to psychological injury1.
 Average cost is $29,901 per mental
health disorder claim, and time off
work is 65 days2.
 A 2018 survey of 3500 employees
from 41 organisations across
Australia, revealed a third of
employees were suffering from
some form of mental health
issue — 36% from depression, 33%
from anxiety and 31% from stress3.

What is Resilience? A few
definitions…
 Resilience is the ability to cope and thrive in the
face of negative events, challenges or adversity.
(Vic Dept of Education & Training, 2018)
 A person's ability to cope with living in spite of
stresses. It's about coping with problems, and
building strengths that protect and promote
wellbeing.(WA Dept of Health, 2018)
 The process of adapting well in the face of
adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant
sources of stress — such as family and relationship
problems, serious health problems or workplace
and financial stressors. (APA, 2018)

An Interdisciplinary
Perspective
 Resilience is a complex construct that may have specific meaning for
a particular individual, family, organisation, society and culture.
 Individuals may be more resilient in some domains of their life than
others, and during some phases of their life compared with other
phases.
 There are likely numerous types of resilience (eg, acute resilience,
emergent resilience) that depend on context.
 To establish a broader definition of resilience, it is essential to
collaborate with experts from various disciplines eg, neuroscience,
psychiatry, physiology, engineering and social sciences (individual,
family, organisational and cultural).

More realistic conceptualization of Resilience?
Resilience is associated with the ability to employ a variety of coping
strategies in a flexible manner depending on the specific challenge, and
then to use corrective feedback to adjust those strategies.

A high level of well-being means that the individual’s or group’s condition is positive.  The condition goes beyond physical health; it includes physical vitality, mental strength, emotional strength, social satisfaction, positive disposition, a sense of accomplishment and personal fulfillment. (Vic Dept of Education & Training, 2018)  A person's ability to cope with living in spite of stresses. It's about coping with problems, and building strengths that protect and promote wellbeing.(WA Dept of Health, 2018)  The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress — such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors. An Interdisciplinary Perspective  Resilience is a complex construct that may have specific meaning for a particular individual, family, organisation, society and culture.  Individuals may be more resilient in some domains of their life than others, and during some phases of their life compared with other phases.  There are likely numerous types of resilience (eg, acute resilience, emergent resilience) that depend on context.  To establish a broader definition of resilience, it is essential to collaborate with experts from various disciplines eg, neuroscience, psychiatry, physiology, engineering and social sciences (individual, family, organisational and cultural).
