2. What Are Bats?
► Bats are small mammals. They are the only mammals that can fly. They
have 2 wings and two little hand that are on top of their wings. They
have two small feet that are under their wings. Bats have two big ears
that help them to hear better than us. The biggest bat that we have
ever seen is one mattress long ( from one side of the wing to the
other). They aren’t harmful for humans. So when you see them, don’t
scare. there are over a thousand kind of bats all over the world.
3. What Do They Eat?
► Some of bats just eat plants. They don’t eat meat, I think because they
don’t have sharp teeth. They really like fruits. They fly and pick berries
of the tree. But some of them eat meat. These groups eat insects.
Some of them are stronger and bigger, so they can eat a mouse, too.
Bats can eat 900 insect per one hour! But these group can’t hurt
people with their teeth. Maybe a little scratch or bite, but you can’t see
it.
4. Where Do They Live? And How Do
They See?
► They usually or it’s better to say always live in caves. Caves are the
best places for bats. They’re the best because bats like dark. They are
blind, so they don’t care where to live. But there aren’t alone, there are
bugs that cover ground. Whenever a bat falls in it, bugs will eat it up in
a second!! You may wonder how can they live without they can see
anything. It’s true that they can’t see, but they can hear anything.
They send waves of sound, then they get echoes from their sounds.
Then they can hear carefully with their big ears. Whenever they hear a
sound after first sounds, they understand that there should be a hole
or a way right in front of them.
5. When, Where and How Do Bats
Sleep? And When Do They Hunt?
► Bats are so strange. They sleep upside down. They hang from a tree or
rocks in a cave and fall sleep. I don’t know why they sleep like that. It
bad for humans or other animals to get more blood in their brain. But I
really don’t know how they can hand and sleep. I heard from people
and I saw in the TV that bats sleep at morning and go hunting at
night. But I think that this is right. But once I saw in OASIS channel
that when they were hunting, it was day. So now I think that they
hunt in the morning until night, then they go to sleep and hang from
rocks in a cave. I think that some of them hunt in the morning, and
some of them at night.
6. Babies Of Bats
► Babies of bats are really small. They are just
10 centimeters. When they born, they are
so thin and any heavy thing can hurt them.
each bat borne just one baby each time.
When they get born, they have sharp hand
and legs.
7. Bats Enemies
► Bats don’t have lots of enemies, but their biggest hunter or enemy is,
Eagle. Eagles are hunters that hunt fish, mouse, and even bats. You
may wonder that how can an eagle eats a bat. Actually, I don’t know!!!
First that I saw an eagle was trying to catch a bat, I was surprised.
Because I didn’t know that eagles can hunt bats. Now I know. As you
know, bats usually fly as groups. So it’s a little hard for an eagle to
catch them, because when it tries to catch them, bats make a big hole
and the eagle goes trough it. Maybe an eagle can catch one or at most
two bats, but it can’t get more. By the way, eagles don’t hunt together.
Each eagle works for him self and his family!
8. Bats Disease
► It’s right that I said that don’t scare from bats, but bats
have a disease. They can be a carrier of the rabies virus.
Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the central nervous
system of warm blooded animals, including humans. The
virus exist in the salvia of and infected bat and enter the
body through a break in the skin, such as a bit or scratch.
Many species of bats have very small teeth and may not
cause an obvious wound to the skin and may go
undetected.
9. Bat Contact Procedures
► If you feel like you can’t catch a bat, SO DON’T CATCH IT. Just call
custodial services while working hours, and call security services after
working hours.
► If you want to get a bat, wear gloves. After you get it, put it in a
container.
► After you get a bat, you have to wash your hands with soap and
running water.
► If you have had any contact with the bat (bite, scratch, etc.), wash the
wound with soap and running water.
► If you got a bat after working hours, put it in the freezer!!
