HUMAN RIGHTS
PUSELETSO MALEBYE
"A right delayed is a right denied." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?
• Human Rights Defined
• Human: A member of the Homo sapiens species; a man, woman or child; a person.
• Rights: Things to which you are entitled or allowed; freedoms that are guaranteed.
• Human rights: The rights you have simply because you are human.
• Human rights are based on the principle of respect for the individual.
• Their fundamental assumption is that each person is a moral and rational being who
deserves to be treated with dignity. They are called human rights because they are universal.
• Whereas nations or specialized groups enjoy specific rights that apply only to them, human
rights are the rights to which everyone is entitled—no matter who they are or where they
live—simply because they are alive.
• Yet many people, when asked to name their rights, will list only freedom of speech and
belief and perhaps one or two others.
HISTORY OF HUMAN RIGHTS
CYRUS CYLINDER (539B.C )
• In 539 B.C., the armies of Cyrus the Great, the first king of ancient Persia, conquered
the city of Babylon.
• But it was his next actions that marked a major advance for Man. He freed the
slaves, declared that all people had the right to choose their own religion, and
established racial equality.
• These and other decrees were recorded on a baked-clay cylinder in the Akkadian
language with cuneiform script.
CHILDREN'S RIGHTS
1. Children are entitled to a name and nationality.
2. Children should be provided with the benefits of social care, including adequate housing, recreation and medical services.
3. Children who are physically or mentally handicapped should be provided with extra care as appropriate.
4. Children should not be discriminated against because of age, colour, religion, language or anything else.
5. Children should be given adequate opportunities and facilities to develop emotionally, spiritually, morally and physically.
6. In all situations, children should be the first to receive protection and care.
7. Children should be protected against cruelty, neglect and exploitation.
8. Children should be protected from any practices which may encourage discrimination. 9. Children are entitled to a free
education.
10. Children are entitled to love and understanding.
Do you think all children receive these rights?
THE SPREAD OF HUMAN RIGHTS
• From Babylon, the idea of human rights spread quickly to India, Greece and
eventually Rome.
• There the concept of “natural law” arose, in observation of the fact that people
tended to follow certain unwritten laws in the course of life, and Roman law was
based on rational ideas derived from the nature of things.
• Documents asserting individual rights, such as the Magna Carta (1215), the Petition
of Right (1628), the US Constitution (1787), the French Declaration of the Rights of
Man and of the Citizen (1789), and the US Bill of Rights (1791) are the written
precursors to many of today’s human rights documents
HUMAN RIGHTS
• Human Rights In 1988, the British Government drew up a list of Human Rights (Human Rights Act) for all British people. All humans being have;
• the right to life
• freedom from torture and degraded treatment
• freedom from slavery and forced labour
• the right to liberty
• the right to a fair trial
• the right not to be punished for something that wasn't a crime when you did it
• the right to respect for private and family life
• freedom of thought, conscience and religion
• freedom of expression
• freedom of assembly and association
• the right to marry or form a civil partnership and start a family
• the right not to be discriminated against in respect of these rights and freedoms
• the right to own property
• the right to an education
the right to participate in free elections
HUMAN RIGHTS AND COVID 19
• DISCUSSION
During this covid 19 pandemic that has arised worldwide, which human right is being
valued, and why?
Do you think this is fair?
Discuss these with a partner.
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF
HUMAN RIGHTS

• All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and
conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”.
article 2

Article 4

HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION
• Human rights violations happens when actions by state (or non -state) actors
abuse, ignore, or deny basic human rights (including civil, political, cultural, social,
and economic rights).
• consequently, violations of human rights may take place when any state or non -
state actor breaches any part of the UDHR treaty or additional international human
rights or humanitarian law.
• • Human rights abuses are watched by United Nations committees, national
institutions and governments and by several independent NGO.
GENDER BASED VIOLENCE
• IS ANY ACTION OF GENDER VIOLENCE THAT RESULT IN OR IS LIKELY TO RESULT IN PHYSICAL , SEXUAL OR PSYCHOSEXUAL HARM OR SURFERING OF
WOMEN.
• MYTHS :
• survivors of sexual assault are responsible for their attack or are capable of preventing it.
• “boys will be boys”
• violent/ sexual aggravators represent a tiny percentage of the population.
• domestic violence and sexual assault are the only types of violence women experience.
• slavery doesn’t exist today
SOMETHING TO PONDER ABOUT:
• WHY HAS GENDER BASED VIOLENCE INCREASED DURING THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC?
BEING POWERFUL IS LIKE BEING A LADY.
Happy women’s month .
THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
