15. Oral vs. Written (Adams)
Oral language
:
<7 words
1 idea
Poor
grammar
Written text:
usually 15-25 words,
complex ideas,
good syntax
16. Research of the CCSSO
Marilyn Jager Rand
Oral language = 4th
grade
~ 10,000
Number of words in
popular written =
1,000,000.
The fastest
way to grow
language is via
written form…
i.e. READING
20. Reading Research:
The more you read the
better you’ll read
The better you

23. The reading deficit is integrally tied to
the knowledge deficit. Adams
Students
need receptive
vocabulary to learn
New knowledge
has to connect to
old knowledge
How much a student learns
about a new concept, and
new words, depends upon
knowing words
24. The World:
0 8 Billion
literate
illiterate
semi-literate
25. The shock…
0 “Of the 8 billion people in the world, … the literate,
or approximately 2 billion, have adopted the habits
of the semi-literate. The next generation has an
aversion to reading. They want to look at pictures
and click as though they were SEMI-literate.”
-- Daniel Sheard, Ph.D

The goal of the Text Set Project is to bring together teams of
librarians, educators and suppliers …
0 2) Teams will consist of librarians and teachers working
together: Librarians have the training to select and
sequence texts well. They are critical partners in students’
reading success. Because of this, the Text Set Project
requires participants to register as teams. There must be
at least 1 librarian to every 2 educators as the work will
be divided between selecting texts and writing questions
and activities to ensure students learn from their reading.
