DePaul University presented "What Not To Do: Internship Edition" for their Chapter Development Session at the PRSSA 2012 National Conference in San Francisco. This is an online version of the presentation.
4. Fixing your resume…
• As an upperclassman, it’s good idea to remove any
high school activities
• Rather, share the skills you developed in high school
during your interview
• Don’t just describe duties, highlight your
accomplishments through results
• Use quantifiable data such as “increased sales by
30%
5. Getting resume help…
• Use your school’s career or advising center
• Ask a professor or PRSSA member to look
over your resume
• Utilize a mentor/mentee program for your
Chapter
6. Dress the part…
• Always better to be a little overdressed
• Clothing should be appropriate and
professional
• Wear something you are comfortable
with, it will make you more confident!
7. Dealing with nerves…
• Practice speaking in front of a mirror or
record yourself
• Be prepared for what they may ask
– Be ready to describe how skills from previous
positions are applicable
• Research the company & come
prepared with 3-5 questions
9. Staying productive…
• Ask your supervisor for more tasks
• Take a break, get away from your desk
• Set goals: keep this list with you at your
desk to reference
10. Making a lasting impression…
• Always arrive at your internship early
• Take initiative on tasks by doing more
than asked
12. Showing your interest…
• Talk with your supervisor about possible
steps within the company
• Find a mentor in the office
• Immerse yourself in company culture
and activities
13. Prepare for the future…
• Compile your work into a portfolio
– Have a digital and hard copy, only
include your best work
• Connect with co-workers on LinkedIn
• Stay up to date with the company
