Let’s Start Today!
Good afternoon! It's a pleasure to speak to you, but I must admit that my that the title of my talk is a bit misleading. And, I apologize, intentionally so. You see, all of crises du jour were solved by my predecessor, Paul Anderson, or have be punted to my successor, Jon Pennock. What I really want to discuss is how do get from the here and now to ten years from now. I dare say that some of us, including me, will be doing other things like spending our winters in Hawai‘i, our Augusts in Maine, and our Octobers in New Orleans.
Still, it is important for all of us to plan, to vision and to create. If we are to truly serve our coastal communities, to support their viability and protect the ecosystems that their a part of, we need to anticipate. This is both an individual and collective effort, and it will be both inspirational and perspirational. It will need to be both top-down and bottom-up.
Knowing that many of you will know much of the story I will recount, my plan is to discuss briefly how Sea Grant began and describe how our focus has changed over the years. I will then…
The state of our coasts today
….Our challenge
….A nimble Sea Grant
….Empowering ourselves for the future
Here’s where the thunder and lightning would occur if George Lucus were giving this talk.
Actually, there was no thunder. There was a notion, a kernel of an idea, the idea of one man.
bathythermograph and Area 51
The’80s began with surviving!
It’s fair to say…
I think that the answer lies in how Sea Grant is structured.
I would argue that Sea Grant is well suited to address the challenges of the future…
