• THERE IS AN ACTUAL AND PERCEIVED GAP IN PROVISION OF SERVICES FOR THOSE
WHO DO OR DON’T REPORT CRIME
• THERE ARE NATIONAL IMPERATIVES AROUND SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE
INVOLVED IN GANGS AND THE CULTURE THAT POTENTIATES THEIR LEVELS OF
VULNERABILITY TO SEXUAL VIOLENCE, DRUGS AND EXPLOITATION
• A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF YOUNG PEOPLE GO ON TO REPORT CRIME THERE ARE
FEW ORGANISATIONS THAT SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE, AND OF THOSE SERVICES A
FRAGMENTED AND LIMITED SERVICE IS PROVIDED ACROSS THE COUNTY
• LOCAL SURVEY INFORMATION DEMONSTRATED THAT THE CONCEPT OF CRIME

• THERE ARE GAPS IN SOME SERVICES AND GEOGRAPHIES FOR VICTIMS FROM
BLACK AND MINORITY ETHNIC (BME) BACKGROUNDS AND NEW EMERGING
COMMUNITIES IN DERBYSHIRE.
• THE SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS WITH MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS AND DISABILITIES
(VULNERABLE PEOPLE) WAS FOUND TO BE A GAP, IN TERMS OF GENERAL
EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND COUNSELLING AND EFFECTIVE JOINT WORKING WITH
LOCAL MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS AND SPECIFIC VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE ORGANISATIONS, (VCSE).
• DEPRIVATION LEVELS ACROSS DERBYSHIRE VARY, IN URBAN AREAS THERE ARE
HIGHER LEVELS OF CRIME, AND CRIME LEVELS CORRESPOND WITH GENERAL
DEPRIVATION LEVELS

WHAT DO WE KNOW?
• SINCE JANUARY 2009, THE CSEW HAS ASKED CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15
WHO ARE RESIDENT IN HOUSEHOLDS IN ENGLAND AND WALES ABOUT THEIR
EXPERIENCE OF CRIME IN THE PREVIOUS 12 MONTHS.
• FINDINGS FROM THE CHILDREN’S SURVEY SHOULD BE INTERPRETED WITH
GREATER CARE THAN FOR THE ADULT SURVEY DATA AS THE NUMBER OF CHILD
INTERVIEWS THAT TAKE PLACE IN ANY YEAR (AROUND 3,000) IS MUCH SMALLER
THAN THE MAIN SURVEY (APPROXIMATELY 35,000)…

WHAT DO WE KNOW?
• BASED ON CSEW DATA IN THE YEAR ENDING JULY 2015: AN ESTIMATED 8,350
CRIMES WERE EXPERIENCED BY CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15 IN DERBYSHIRE, 6% OF
ALL CRIMES IN DERBYSHIRE.
• IN THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 2015, THE SURVEY ESTIMATED 12% OF CHILDREN
AGED 10 TO 15 WERE VICTIMS OF CRIME. THIS IS THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
IN WHICH THE SURVEY HAS SHOWN THAT 12% OF CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15 WERE
VICTIMS OF CRIME.
• DATA FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS, THE REQUIREMENT OF THIS
SPECIFICATION, IS NOT MEASURED. IN ADDITION THE NUMBERS OF YOUNG
PEOPLE THAT WOULD WANT TO ACCESS THE SERVICE IS NOT PREDICTABLE.

WHAT ARE THE KNOWN KNOWNS?

ENGAGING YOUNG VICTIMS OF CRIME EVENT WWW.ENGAGINGVICTIMS.ORG WHAT DO WE KNOW? • THERE IS AN ACTUAL AND PERCEIVED GAP IN PROVISION OF SERVICES FOR THOSE WHO DO OR DON’T REPORT CRIME • THERE ARE NATIONAL IMPERATIVES AROUND SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED IN GANGS AND THE CULTURE THAT POTENTIATES THEIR LEVELS OF VULNERABILITY TO SEXUAL VIOLENCE, DRUGS AND EXPLOITATION • A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF YOUNG PEOPLE GO ON TO REPORT CRIME THERE ARE FEW ORGANISATIONS THAT SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE, AND OF THOSE SERVICES A FRAGMENTED AND LIMITED SERVICE IS PROVIDED ACROSS THE COUNTY • LOCAL SURVEY INFORMATION DEMONSTRATED THAT THE CONCEPT OF CRIME IS NOT CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD, SO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE WHEN A CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED

ENGAGING YOUNG VICTIMS OF CRIME EVENT WWW.ENGAGINGVICTIMS.ORG WHAT DO WE KNOW? • FEEDBACK FROM YOUNG PEOPLE ALSO INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS A NEED TO BUILD CONFIDENCE AND KNOWLEDGE TO SELF-REFER • THERE ARE GAPS IN SOME SERVICES AND GEOGRAPHIES FOR VICTIMS FROM BLACK AND MINORITY ETHNIC (BME) BACKGROUNDS AND NEW EMERGING COMMUNITIES IN DERBYSHIRE. • THE SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS WITH MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS AND DISABILITIES (VULNERABLE PEOPLE) WAS FOUND TO BE A GAP, IN TERMS OF GENERAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND COUNSELLING AND EFFECTIVE JOINT WORKING WITH LOCAL MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS AND SPECIFIC VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY SOCIAL ENTERPRISE ORGANISATIONS, (VCSE). • DEPRIVATION LEVELS ACROSS DERBYSHIRE VARY, IN URBAN AREAS THERE ARE HIGHER LEVELS OF CRIME, AND CRIME LEVELS CORRESPOND WITH GENERAL DEPRIVATION LEVELS

ENGAGING YOUNG VICTIMS OF CRIME EVENT WWW.ENGAGINGVICTIMS.ORG WHAT DO WE KNOW? • SINCE JANUARY 2009, THE CSEW HAS ASKED CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15 WHO ARE RESIDENT IN HOUSEHOLDS IN ENGLAND AND WALES ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE OF CRIME IN THE PREVIOUS 12 MONTHS. • FINDINGS FROM THE CHILDREN’S SURVEY SHOULD BE INTERPRETED WITH GREATER CARE THAN FOR THE ADULT SURVEY DATA AS THE NUMBER OF CHILD INTERVIEWS THAT TAKE PLACE IN ANY YEAR (AROUND 3,000) IS MUCH SMALLER THAN THE MAIN SURVEY (APPROXIMATELY 35,000)… CRIME SURVEY FOR ENGLAND AND WALES (CSEW) JULY 2015:

ENGAGING YOUNG VICTIMS OF CRIME EVENT WWW.ENGAGINGVICTIMS.ORG WHAT DO WE KNOW? • BASED ON CSEW DATA IN THE YEAR ENDING JULY 2015: AN ESTIMATED 8,350 CRIMES WERE EXPERIENCED BY CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15 IN DERBYSHIRE, 6% OF ALL CRIMES IN DERBYSHIRE. • IN THE YEAR ENDING MARCH 2015, THE SURVEY ESTIMATED 12% OF CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15 WERE VICTIMS OF CRIME. THIS IS THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR IN WHICH THE SURVEY HAS SHOWN THAT 12% OF CHILDREN AGED 10 TO 15 WERE VICTIMS OF CRIME. • DATA FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 YEARS, THE REQUIREMENT OF THIS SPECIFICATION, IS NOT MEASURED. IN ADDITION THE NUMBERS OF YOUNG PEOPLE THAT WOULD WANT TO ACCESS THE SERVICE IS NOT PREDICTABLE.
