VER the past few years, we’ve seen
the ombré look go from dip-dyed ends
to drastic colour pairings, like deep
black roots with platinum blonde
ends, and now it’s time to refresh it yet again! As
ombré fades out (pun intended!), there’s a new celeb
hair trend taking over Hollywood: sombré. Sombré
is a softer, more subtle and less contrasted ombré.
It’s obtained by applying a mix of shades in the same
colour family, with added highlights or lowlights, to
achieve a very natural transition from dark to light.
Ombré was every lazy girl’s dream-come-true: Let
your roots grow out and essentially you’ve got the
style. But now it’s time to put in a little more effort
and look glam with sombré.

KEEP THESE FIVE TIPS IN MIND WHEN YOU
TAKE THE SOMBRÉ PLUNGE
1
SOMBRÉ looks best on high-shine hair, so give it a little
boost in between colour appointments. If you are going
to the salon for a haircut or a blowout, ask your colourist
to give you a shine treatment too.
2
TO nail the soft, subtle look, highlights should start a
couple of centimetres from the roots – maintaining
depth while still connecting the roots and slowly
brightening towards the ends.
3
TO keep your sombré colour intact, cut back on
shampooing, as frequent washing will fade any colour.
When you do shampoo, choose a sulfate-free shampoo,
and a great hydrating mask once a week is a must!
4
WHILE sombré suits almost everyone, it looks
particularly nice with long locks. The longer the hair, the
better the sombré. Any length below shoulder-length
will look amazing.
5
TO show off your highlights, opt for a cut with
layered ends. This way, the brighter ends won’t fall
on top of each other, which can cause the ends to
look too heavy at the tips.
