2. Why Is the English Language
So Important for Us?
1) English: A global language
• More than 1.12 billion people speak in English
either first or second language (the highest in
the world!)
• In today’s world knowledge of English plays a
pivotal role in academic and professional
development
2) For Ukraine:
• It is important for our identity and scope to
work closely with Western countries
3. The Main Tasks of English Teaching in the
Higher Education Institutions
• To teach and develop a student to be fluent in
English and operate with professional
terminology;
• To expose students to use the information
technologies for self-education and self-
development
4. The Current Situation with Knowledge of
English in Ukraine
• According to the results of research by the
international organization EF EPI English
Proficiency Index among the adult population:
Ukraine ranked the 47th place among the 80
countries that participated in the research

7. Why Do We Feed the Rear?
Main Problems (Reasons)
of Low Proficiency in English :
• English is not mandatory from our childhood;
• Lack of motivation to learn English;
• Students find it is very difficult to learn English;
• Lack of the possibility to use English in real life
• English is not still widely used even in academic
and professional institutions.
• Less than 20% of officials speak English
8. Problems in Higher Education in Teaching
English as a Professional
• The majority of students studying at universities
have a low level of English language skills or had
studied another foreign language in school;
• Teaching groups are compiled according to the
general division, not taking into account English-
language skills of students;
• Lack of motivation for a student to learn English;
• The existence of a language barrier.

Problems in Schools
• The appropriate method of teaching English as
a foreign language is still missing in many
schools;
• Number of skilled teachers is few and there is
lack of opportunities for their professional
development

• Academic and professional training of the
teachers;
• Special language and pedagogical training
for English teachers;
• Interactive teaching instead of traditional
blackboard teaching: (games, conversation,
audio, video, interactive discussion etc.);
• Course curriculum design
13. For Students
• Offer students with low English skills to attend
additional English language courses, different
workshops;
• Implement integrated exercises, discussions,
games into the classes;
• Involve students in the preparation and
participation in international conferences,
project activities;
• Suggest watching movies in English about
their future profession;
14. Government and Other Stakeholders
1) Education Reform: Improvement of English should be a part of
our ongoing education reform;
2) Ukrainian schools and higher education institutions to be
compliant with the Common European Framework of Reference
for Languages (CEFR) standards;
3) Textbooks: Textbooks and study materials should be widely
available to the students;
4) Curriculum redesign: English should be mandatory from the
childhood and appointment of English teachers in every schools;
5) British councils, US embassy and other NGOs: Specialized
programs, voluntary workshops, exchange programs of English
teachers from native speaking countries (for example “Go
Global”, “Peace Corps”, “Go Camps”);
