2. Introduction
RIP is a distance-vector routing protocol used in computer networks
to determine the best path for data transmission based on the
number of hops (intermediate devices) between routers.
2
3. Key Features:
o Simple and easy to configure
o Suitable for small- to medium-sized networks
o Uses hop count as the metric to determine the best path
4. Operation:
• RIP periodically sends routing updates (advertisements) to
neighboring routers.
• Advertisements contain network destination and associated hop
count information.
• Routers maintain a routing table based on these advertisements.
4
5. •Limitations:
• Maximum hop count of 15 restricts its use to smaller networks.
• Doesn't consider factors like network congestion or link speed
in routing decisions.
• Less suitable for larger, more complex networks.
5
7. Conclusion:
• RIP is a basic and straightforward routing protocol.
• It provides a simple way to exchange routing information in
small- to medium-sized networks.
• While limited in scope, it still has its uses in certain
environments.
