Five Core Reading Skills
1. Alphabet Knowledge: recognition of the letters of the alphabet
2. Phonemic Awareness: the ability to recognize and manipulate
the phonemes, the “smallest units composing spoken language”
3. Fluency: the ability to read accurately, quickly and with the
correct intonation.
4. Vocabulary: the comprehension of a sufficient number of words
to be able to understand text.
5. Comprehension: “the process of simultaneously extracting and
constructing meaning through interaction and involvement with
the written language”

The Basics of Marungko Approach
• The Marungko Approach is designed to equip Grade One
pupils the necessary reading skills to improve their
achievement in reading. Likewise, it seeks to develop
a trainingmodel to enhance teachers’ competence in the
teaching of reading in the primary grades most especially in
Grade One.The goal of this strategy in reading is to enable
grade one pupils to instill in their minds to appreciate the
songs and poems created for Filipino children and
eventually to communicate in written and oral forms
through effective reading instruction.

The Basics of Marungko Approach
• The Marungko approach provides materials to
the success in teaching reading. It starts with
letter sounds rather than name. Certain
comical stories of letter to signify its sound
are being introduced. Instead of the usual
arrangement (order) of letters in the alphabet,
it starts with m, s, a, I, o…

Ang Marungko Approach ay ipinakilala ni
Nooraihan Ali, asawa ng Malaysian Minister
sa dalawang guro ng Marungko, Bulacan. Sa
approach na ito, unang natututunan ng bata ang
mga tunog ng bawat titik ng Alpabetong
Filipino o ang tinatawag na Mastery of
Sounds of Letters sa ingles.

The Basics of Marungko Approach
Ginagamitan ito ng phono-syllabic technique
o pagbusisi sa tunog ng bawat titik upang
mapagsama ito at makabuo ng pantig-tunog nito.
Dito, sisiguraduhing ang tunog ng titik ang
unang maituro ng guro hindi ang ngalan ng
letra. Sa paggamit ng approach na ito, mas
madaling maintindihan ng bata ang bawat letra at
mas maaga siyang matutong bumasa lalo na sa
mga pananalitang ginagamit sa bahay o Mother
Tongue.

- pagpapakilala ng mga larawan ng mga bagay na nagsisimula sa
tunog na pinag – aralan
- pagpapakilala ng tunog
- pagpapakita ng hugis ng tunog
- pagpapakilala ng titik
- pagsulat ng hugis sa hangin, sa sahig, sa palad etc.
- pagsulat ng hugis sa titik sa papel
- pagsusulat ng simulang tunog

  • 6. The Basics of Marungko Approach • The Marungko Approach is designed to equip Grade One pupils the necessary reading skills to improve their achievement in reading. Likewise, it seeks to develop a trainingmodel to enhance teachers’ competence in the teaching of reading in the primary grades most especially in Grade One.The goal of this strategy in reading is to enable grade one pupils to instill in their minds to appreciate the songs and poems created for Filipino children and eventually to communicate in written and oral forms through effective reading instruction.   • 9. The Basics of Marungko Approach Ginagamitan ito ng phono-syllabic technique o pagbusisi sa tunog ng bawat titik upang mapagsama ito at makabuo ng pantig-tunog nito. Dito, sisiguraduhing ang tunog ng titik ang unang maituro ng guro hindi ang ngalan ng letra. Sa paggamit ng approach na ito, mas madaling maintindihan ng bata ang bawat letra at mas maaga siyang matutong bumasa lalo na sa mga pananalitang ginagamit sa bahay o Mother Tongue.
