5. Translation
Translating the news seems like it should be relatively easy at
first glance. Unlike songs, poetry, or even more standard prose
literature, news stories generally aim at absolute clarity. They
are also usually written for a general audience; you aren’t
expected to have an advanced degree to read a newspaper.
CULTURAL CONTEXT As is often the case, what makes
journalistic translation somewhat difficult is the question of
cultural context.
6. Translation (cont.)
POLITICAL SENSITIVITY Words used in everyday political
discourse can often be imbued with a particular meaning in
different cultures/languages. Translators have to be aware of
this so they do not accidentally say something stronger than
they mean.
For example
Kashmir ( Pakistani Held Kashmir) Indian Kashmir
Jinnah
Ghandi…

LINGUISTIC CONSIDERATIONS
Its particularly important to translate correctly, because even
small variations can dramatically change the meaning of a
sentence. Ex. Although, but, from, even.
News and Journalism Translation for Global Communication
News and journalism translation is needed for anything from
science and medical journals to very specific publications. It is
imperative that translation from one news source to another is
completely accurate for any report, whether for investigative
reporting, or for medical research translation.
8. Structuring and Re writing of news story
■ The inverted Pyramid
The most popular structure for news
stories is the inverted pyramid. In the
inverted pyramid, the information is
arranged in descending order of
importance.
The most important material is placed at
the beginning of the story, and less
important material follows.
9. Structuring and Re writing of news story (cont.)
■ Narration or Story telling
One alternative to the inverted pyramid is narration or story
telling. Narration uses scenes, anecdotes and dialogue to build to a
climax. People are prominent in the story, and they are responsible
for the action. The story has a beginning, middle and end.
The inverted pyramid is popular because it still serves readers
well. It tells them quickly what they want to know. It also serves
the reporter by forcing her to sharpen her news judgment, to
identify and rank the most important elements of the story.
10. Structuring and Re writing of news story (cont.)
Narrative style This format works better with feature articles that
provide the time and space for character ands tory development.
■ The hourglass (Combining Facts and Storytelling)
The Hourglass Structure Hourglass structure involves both the
pyramid structure and the narrative structure of news writing. The
first part of the article focuses on the facts of the story and
compliments the facts by giving a narrative version in the second
part. This story structure is well suited to news items that require
a chronological narrative such as crime articles.
11. Re writing of news story
Rewriting literally means to write again to check the formats,
placements, facts and figures. Editing involves correction of news
stories by checking its grammatical errors, spellings,
punctuations, etc. But sometimes the errors are so serious that
they require the story to be rewritten. Rewriting is done because
the original copy of news story has serious flaws in formats,
organization or accuracy.
12. Re writing of news story
Sometimes a copy once edited is still filled with mistakes and errors
so much so that it needs to be written again. This process of writing
a news story again is called Rewriting. Rewriting is nothing but re-
telling the same story once which has been already told.
PURPOSE OF REWRITING •
■ Clarity
■ Readability
■ Uniformity
