Origami originated in Japan during the early 17th century after the introduction of washi paper from China. Origami, which means "folded paper" in Japanese, began as simple folded shapes but became a form of cultural creativity. During the Genroku era in the late 17th century, origami cranes and boats became fashionable designs and were frequently depicted in Ukiyoe prints. While origami declined some in the early 20th century, elements of its traditions still remain in Japanese culture today.
