2. The History of Book Day
• World book day is a charity event celebrated all around the world.
• In the UK it was first celebrated in 1995.
• It was first organised by UNESCO to help promote reading and
publishing.

3. Book Vouchers
• Children in primary schools in the UK, recieve book
vouchers for £1 to spend on a book.
• Also, there are many books published for children that only
cost £1 !
• This encourages children to read more.
4. Schools
• Most schools in the UK allow their children to dress up as a
book character.
• There are often competitions for the students and the best
costume wins a prize!
5. Reading
• Libraries in Towns and in schools often have Reading competitions.
• Students read up to 10 or more books in the month and write
reviews.
• This is important to encourage Reading.

8. William Shakespeare
• William Shakespeare was a famous poet, playwright and
actor.
• He was Baptised 26 April 1564 and died 23 April 1616
• He lived in Stratford-upon-Avon in England.
9. Facts about Shakespeare
• He wrote many famous plays, including;
• A Midsummers night´s dream
• Romeo and Juliet
• Macbeth
• Othello
• Hamlet

10. The Globe Theatre
• This is where many of Shakespeare´s Plays were acted out.
• It is situated in london.
• Many people used to complain of the horrible smell.
• Women were usually acted by men, because women were not allowed, by law, to
act on an Elizabethan stage.
11. Fun Facts
• When William Shakespeare died he left his wife, Anne Hathaway, his second
best bed.
• ´I, William Shackspeare of Stratford-upon-Avon in the county of Warwick,... I give
unto my wife my second best bed with the furniture.´
• Some people believe this is because Shakespeare did not love his wife, however
others suggest it was because that was often a gift for a wife, and that this was
the bed that they actually slept in, and the best bed was used by guests.
• In England a Poet called Carol Ann Duffy wrote a poem about his wife and the
second best bed, the poem is called Anne Hathaway.
