Ricoh Australia (www.ricoh.com.au/) operates a distribution
environment that consists of three warehouse facilities in Sydney, Perth
and Melbourne. Ricoh understands the needs of its
customers who expect their supply orders to arrive
on time and without fail. On average, Ricoh
Australia produces 1,200 bar code shipping labels
each day. Dispatch labeling plays a critical role in
the distribution centers’ fast moving operation.
Labels are placed on pallets, cardboard skids,
envelops and product cartons. For more than 10
years, Ricoh Australia has turned to Printronix as its
preferred label printer.
Transportation carriers in Australia have strict bar
code quality guidelines. Shipments with unscannable bar codes are
rejected, resulting in delivery delays and higher freight fees. When it
came time to replace the older printers Ricoh Australia selected the
Printronix T5308 with integrated Online Data Validation (ODV). While the

as low as one per day, and mostly attributed to warehouse dirt and debris, the financial risk associated
with non‐compliance was too great. Eliminating freight carrier claims and associated administrative
costs justified the small additional investment in ODV when it came time to replace the printers.

The new printers with ODV work seamlessly in the background, require no
additional labor, self detect and replace bad
bar codes. ODV software analyzes incoming
data to identify bar code commands for
every label. After printing, the bar code
image is scanned and tested against the symbology
specifications. If an unscannable or poor quality bar code is
detected, the label is automatically cancelled and a replacement
label is printed. This process eliminates the need to conduct
inefficient, expensive and random manual verification.
