Ricoh Australia relies on Printronix thermal bar code printers with integrated Online Data Validation (ODV) technology to print shipping labels for outbound logistics from its three distribution centers across Australia. The ODV technology ensures 100% scannable bar codes by automatically verifying and replacing any unscannable codes. This allows Ricoh Australia to meet strict carrier requirements and avoid penalties, improving operational profitability. Ricoh Australia has experienced reliable printer performance with the Printronix solution and values the 100% bar code accuracy provided by ODV.

Office Automation Leader Relies on Top Quality Bar Printing to Meet
Compliance with Shipping Carriers
Ricoh Australia (www.ricoh.com.au/) operates a distribution
environment that consists of three warehouse facilities in Sydney, Perth
and Melbourne. Ricoh understands the needs of its
customers who expect their supply orders to arrive
on time and without fail. On average, Ricoh
Australia produces 1,200 bar code shipping labels
each day. Dispatch labeling plays a critical role in
the distribution centers’ fast moving operation.
Labels are placed on pallets, cardboard skids,
envelops and product cartons. For more than 10
years, Ricoh Australia has turned to Printronix as its
preferred label printer.
Transportation carriers in Australia have strict bar
code quality guidelines. Shipments with unscannable bar codes are
rejected, resulting in delivery delays and higher freight fees. When it
came time to replace the older printers Ricoh Australia selected the

as low as one per day, and mostly attributed to warehouse dirt and debris, the financial risk associated
with non‐compliance was too great. Eliminating freight carrier claims and associated administrative
costs justified the small additional investment in ODV when it came time to replace the printers.
“Reliability and quality is excellent and rarely is there a printer problem hindering their business,” said
Mike Betts, supply chain and operations manager for Ricoh Australia.
The new printers with ODV work seamlessly in the background, require no
additional labor, self detect and replace bad
bar codes. ODV software analyzes incoming
data to identify bar code commands for
every label. After printing, the bar code
image is scanned and tested against the symbology
specifications. If an unscannable or poor quality bar code is
detected, the label is automatically cancelled and a replacement
label is printed. This process eliminates the need to conduct
inefficient, expensive and random manual verification.
Continued Improvement in Supply Chain Operations
The ENERGY STAR® certified Printronix thermal printer with ODV
verifies bar code labels are 100 percent machine readable, even
in hot and dusty warehouse conditions, helping Ricoh Australia maintain a strong reputation for high
standards in outbound logistics. Even more importantly, the company
is able to commit to its own mantra to reduce waste, control
document workflow and improve overall efficiency.
“We have been very satisfied with the performance of our Printronix
ODV thermal bar code printers at our facilities,” said Andrew Ryan,
warehouse supervisor at Ricoh Australia. “We selected Printronix’s
ODV solution thanks to the 100 percent bar code accuracy provided.”
“Without the quality of Printronix’s
ODV, we would not be able to print
a steady stream of clear bar codes
needed to achieve competitive
shipping rates and avoid delivery
problems.”
