3. Introduction
For the final Element in Natural Build and Environment (ENBE)
assignment, it has been split to two different parts .Part one, we required to
make a report .After that we are to be a mayor of a city that is dying and
we are asked to propose a new and improved city . In a group of 6, we will
decide the theme of our city .The group I am under chose the theme flying
city.
For the second part of the assignment, we required to make a model of the
city chosen by the lecturer in our group and also make a presentation
board to describe and illustrate the important information about the purpose
of city “x”.
This assignment gives us a better understanding on this subject as it tells
us what makes a better city so we understands the importance of the
environment to a great city.
4. The city
2.1 :The city definition
- A city is a relatively large and permanent human settlement. Cities are
the highest forms of social organization through the result of long years of
human development. The complexity of road systems, transportation,
building laws, markets, food distribution, educational systems, etc.
2.2:What is the brief history
- Early humans led a nomadic existence, relying on hunting and gathering
for sustenance. Between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago, systematic
cultivation of plants and the domestication of animals allowed for more
permanent settlements. During the fourth millennium B.C., the
requirements for the "urban revolution" were finally met: the production of a
surplus of storable food, a system of writing, a more complex social
organization, and technological advances such as the plough, potter's
wheel, loom, and metallurgy.
2.3: What makes a city
- In terms of a sociological definition, a city is a location which has a high
concentration of people or a large population. A city is typically governed by
one governmental entity.
2.4: What makes a good city
- A secure water supply, affordable houses, fire protection, affordable
medical fees, social services, a community spirit and solid economy.
2.5: What is a future city
- If the cities of the past were shaped by people, the cities of the future are
likely to be shaped by ideas, and there are a lot of competing ones about
how such a futuristic urban space should look. Some of these revolve
around the idea that smarter equals greener.
5.
6. Ancient Cities
Athens
3.1: History
- Athens, named after its patron goddess Athena, was inhabited in the
Bronze Age. Athens was governed until c.1000 B.C. by Ionian kings, who
had gained suzerainty over all Attica. After the Ionian kings Athens was
rigidly governed by its aristocrats through the archontate (see archons),
until Solon began to enact liberal reforms in 594 B.C. Solon abolished
serfdom, modified the harsh laws attributed to Draco (who had governed
Athens c.621 B.C.), and altered the economy and constitution to give
power to all the propertied classes, thus establishing a limited democracy.
His economic reforms were largely retained when Athens came under
(560–511 B.C.) the rule of the tyrant Pisistratus and his
sons Hippias and Hipparchus. During this period the city's economy
boomed and its culture flourished. Building on the system of
Solon, Cleisthenes then established (c.506 B.C.) a democracy for the
freemen of Athens, and the city remained a democracy during most of the
years of its greatness.
3.3 What makes is a significant city and what are the details?
- as a landlocked location was a powerful city-state that emerged in
conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus. A centre
for the arts, learning and philosophy, home
of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum,[3][4]
it is widely referred to as
the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.
- we owe nearly all our ideas as to the fundamentals of art, literature, and
philosophy, in fact, of almost the whole of our intellectual life.
- without Athens, Greek history would lose three quarters of its significance,
and modern life and thought would become infinitely the poorer.
3.4 Conclusion about the cities
7. - Athens was once a very powerful city as it had many intellectual people
which caused people to fear challenging the might of Athens they can
create very strategic battle plans which shows brains beats bronzes.
3.5 What information or element that you can use to your new future
city
- It helps me realize the importance of education as I will fund more schools
and universities to allow all the people to be able to study in a very
comfortable environment as it will not be over crowded with people.

9. Present city
Copenhagen
4.1: History
- Although the earliest historical records of Copenhagen are from the end of
the 12th century, recent archaeological finds in connection with work on the
city's metro have revealed the remains of a large merchant's mansion near
today's Kongens Nytorv from c. 1020. Excavations in Pilestræde have also
led to the discovery of a well from the late 12th century, and the remains of
an old church with graves dating to the 11th century have been unearthed
near where Strøget meets Rådhuspladsen. These finds indicate that
Copenhagen's origins go back at least as far as the 11th century, while
substantial discoveries of flint tools in the area provide evidence of
settlements as far back as the Stone Age.
4.3: Significant of the city and the details
- Copenhagen has worked intensively to meet environmental challenges,
focusing on innovative and sustainable solutions. It has now become one of
the top sustainable city which should be an example to other cities.
4.4: Conclusion
- Copenhagen has faced many challenges but successfully overcame them
and is now a very respectable city as it became one of the top 5
sustainable cities in the whole world
4.5 What information or element that you can use to your new future
city
- I can use the idea of Copenhagen of being a sustainable city and
implement it into my city which will help me to try and balance between
development and also conserving the environment as well as the
determination copenhangen

11. Future city
Elysium
5.1: History
-The year is 2154. Earth is in ruins. The rich have all fled the planet,
migrating to the space station Elysium. While the wealthy live it up in
space, all their needs tended to by ridiculously advanced technology, the
poor are left with practically nothing back on Earth.
5:3: Significance of the city and what are the details
-Elysium's citizens live in absolute comfort and regularly use medical
devices called Med-Bays to cure any disease and injury, even reverse the
aging process or give themselves whole new bodies and faces.
5.4: Conclusion
- Elysium as the name states is heaven but alas it’s only for the rich
whereas the poor will suffer. But it has very high technology which can cure
any disease known to man which is can help save many lives.
5.5: What information or element that you can use for your new future
city
- I can use the extremely advance medical technology which can save
many lives.
- The creators of Elysium too understand the importance of sustainability
which is why every building is surrounded by trees and this shows how
much they stress on the importance of sustainability.
12. Case study
6.1: Where did I get all my information from
- I obtain all my information through all the websites I have obtained from
the internet.
6.2: What are the important part or important consideration
- The important part from all the research I have done about the cities were
the challenges faced during development, the mistakes the people have
made such as not considering the geographical position which caused
problems when the place expanded to become a developed city such as
Athens which was built and surrounded by 4 mountains . This was not a
problem until further development. In short, we need to think ahead.
13. City ‘X’/ Neopolis
7.1: How did you come up with the solution to create this new city
- After several weeks worth of research, I have chosen to make my city
based on the movie “Elysium”. Which has a city in the form of a space
shuttle. This is because this is based on the most recent futuristic movie
about a new city which would be the most logical city to build.
7.2: Why is it on air
- It is on air is because planet Earth is running out of room or space to
create a new city and also mother earth is slowly dying due to all the
industrial waste that has been dispose. In addition the earth is also
overpopulated and devastated . Last but not least , a flying city can avoid
all natural disasters since it is high enough to avoid getting hit by a tsunami
and tornados, earthquakes will not affect it , it can easily maneuver past
volcanic eruptions and fly higher if needed . Hence, the city is on air as it
brings a lot of advantages.
7.3 What is the important characteristic and elements
14. - The important characteristics and elements of this city is that the city will
have highly advance medical technology and also it will be surrounded by
trees to improve air quality. All of the places such as markets will be within
walking distance to reduce carbon foot print in the city.
7.5 Conclusion about the new X city
- The new city will be a place where both the environment and mankind can
live together in peace and harmony with fully equipped medical technology
which can prevent unwanted deaths, provides a sustainable place to live in,
is a safe place to live in as it guarded by robots which can prevent
casualties and has a modern study environment.
15. Conclusion
After conducting my research, I have learned that there are changes
between the ancient cities, present cities and future cities. As time passes
the definition of what makes a better city varies as well.
In addition to that, I have learned that it is tough to be an urban planner for
a city as there are many factors to consider when planning for a city such
as the geometric structure, the geographic placing of the city, how the city
should be governed and what is most important is the comfort and safety of
the people living in the city you build.
Last but not least, when planning for a city, it is crucial for a green
environment to be included when planning for a city. This is because a
sustainable city is a future city.
