SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT NOW, AN INTERNATIONAL GEO-POLITICAL PRIORITY … “ we'll roll back the specter of a warming planet” … … “ we say we can no longer consume the world's resources without regard to effect” ... … “ new green jobs to reduce dependece from oil” … … “ the economy of alternative energies” … … “ will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories” … …  a NEW GREEN DEAL to exit the economical and finacnial crises Barack Hussein Obama, new president of USA
NOWADAY: MORE AND MORE INCREASING THE DEMAND OF SUCH COMPETENCIES FROM COMANIES AND DESIGN OFFICIES (a priority not only for governamental instit.) DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY
2005-2014:  UNITED NATION DECADE ON EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.   it should be a “must” even for any design university to establish courses on design for sustainability
LeNS is a 3 years project (Dec/2007 - Dec/2010) funded by the European Commission (Asia Link Programme, EuropAid), involving 7 design schools in Europe and Asia

MAIN OUTPUT:  Open Learning  E-Package on DfS a platform allowing  (any potential) teacher to download free of charge,  open source  and  copyleft learning resources  (slideshows, texts, audio-videos, etc.) that could be  modified/remixed  and  reused ,   i.e.  adapted according to his/her specific didactic needs, institutional requirements and local context particularities
MAIN ACTIVITY:  8 ( transcultural ) pilot courses: . an asian teacher is guest by a EU teacher (+ vice versa) and they are observed by a third teacher . EU students design for asian context (+ vice versa)
…  build through a  transcultural  learning process

OLEP: INTRO TO MAIN FUNCTIONALITIES a quick tour 1. download/view learning resources by  teacher/course/year 2. download/view learning resources by  content/type

2.  the student/teacher wants have access to all learning resources of a particular teacher/course/year c) … click on the desired teacher/course/ academic year to view/download … a) …and selects the “teacher” section b) …selects a desired language/s…
3.  the student/teacher can view and download learning resources by title and by format type c) …and download the selected learning resources a) she/he can view the learning resources … b) …select learning resources she/he want to download…

why should ( YOU ) students design a sustainable concept for a far away context? THIS (“FORCED”) LEARNING PROCESS ENABLES: A.   students (designing for other campus/contexts) to discover a context different from their own by a strategic analysis and by the direct critics of local teachers over their design. B.   teachers (receiving the concept designed for their own campus/contexts) to discover the other’s culture interpretation (and be surprised by unusual ideas). C.   to  build an articulated and shared visions of possible changes (catalogue of sustainable ideas).
LENS STUDENTS AWARD  . the  5 BEST PROJECTS,  of each LeNS pilot course (8 altogether), selected by the teachers, will participate to the lens student competition . the competition opens also for the external registrants DEADLINE the selected projects must be sent (using a given format) to  [email_address]   3 weeks after the course has ended
LENS STUDENTS AWARD  PRIZE: THE WINNER (1ST):  one representative from the winning team (that could be composed by 1 to 5 students), will be invited and his/her expenses paid to the Bangalore conference, exhibition and award ceremony (September 2010) THE 1ST / 2ND / 3RD PRIZES + 10 SPECIAL MENTIONS PROJECTS:  will be displayed at the Bangalore exhibition and in the exhibition catalogue INFO: www.lens.polimi.it , click “LeNS Students Award”

  • 6. LeNS is a 3 years project (Dec/2007 - Dec/2010) funded by the European Commission (Asia Link Programme, EuropAid), involving 7 design schools in Europe and Asia

MAIN OUTPUT: Open Learning E-Package on DfS a platform allowing (any potential) teacher to download free of charge, open source and copyleft learning resources (slideshows, texts, audio-videos, etc.) that could be modified/remixed and reused , i.e. adapted according to his/her specific didactic needs, institutional requirements and local context particularities

  • 34. why should ( YOU ) students design a sustainable concept for a far away context? THIS (“FORCED”) LEARNING PROCESS ENABLES: A. students (designing for other campus/contexts) to discover a context different from their own by a strategic analysis and by the direct critics of local teachers over their design. B. teachers (receiving the concept designed for their own campus/contexts) to discover the other’s culture interpretation (and be surprised by unusual ideas). C. to build an articulated and shared visions of possible changes (catalogue of sustainable ideas).

LENS STUDENTS AWARD . the 5 BEST PROJECTS, of each LeNS pilot course (8 altogether), selected by the teachers, will participate to the lens student competition . the competition opens also for the external registrants DEADLINE the selected projects must be sent (using a given format) to [email_address] 3 weeks after the course has ended
