Analytical Thinkers: Study
Abstract
An intervention cum action research was undertaken to develop and
transact a short supplementary course in alphamatics for grade seven
and study students’(N=30; Age: 12-14 years; Urban school;) reactions to
it. The innovative features the course being the teacher-developed
graded activity sheets (n=24); three-phased systematic intervention (pre-
active, interactive, and post-active phases with an action plan); cross-
curricular linkage of numbers and alphabet), and mental stimulation and
challenge to students as well as the teacher. The course was transacted
as laboratory investigations in mathematics. A four week intervention
with zero-hour session everyday evoked favourable reactions (p ≤ 0.05;
D.F. =2) and overwhelmingly positive reactions from students. The
researcher said, “By providing the opportunity to apply the mathematical
concepts and operations to a new situation dominated by alphabets, we
can help children to develop their higher thinking skills.”“Initially, it was a
bit difficult to think of mathematics in terms of alphabets but the
worksheets and teacher guidance helped the transition. Challenge to be
able to think in a new scenario can stimulate mind,” said a participating
student.
