2. Draft One:
My first design was made with the features I wanted to
include from the research I did on business cards. This design
is simple enough in my eyes as it is a plain business card
layout with a slight geometric design which I added as this
business card is supposed to be for a multimedia company so
I figured it may as well have some kind of fun feature to it. I
went with a grayscale colour scheme as this was what I had
wanted when I was looking into other business cards. Black
and white colours are safe in my eyes and although they can
be the downfall of a design, I feel like when used in the right
way, they can truly make something of something as simple
as a business card. I can say that I think the geometric design
I had picked out helped me use a grayscale colour scheme in
the right way as it is not too eye-catching however it does
add a certain quality to the design. I also made sure to add
the relevant information to the business card such as the
social media I have for the company as of yet, the website
URL, my address, full name, professionals and other
important details that would be necessary for a potential
client to have.
3. Process:
I began the process with a white background and then I looked
into the section on canva called elements and then I just
looked up 'geometric design' and found one that suited my
tastes for this design. From here I then went to the text
portion on canva and I added a small bit of text, finding the
Instagram logo in the elements section and added the
username of my company's Instagram profile to the business
card. From there I then added my full name and my
professions within the white part of the business card so that
they were clear enough to see without being completely in the
way. Then I went into the elements section again and found
four different icons to represent the pieces of information that
I needed to include on my business card (such as my address
email address, website URL and my phone number as this
would all be information a potential client would need.)
4. Draft Two:
For this draft I wanted to continue on with what I
had been doing with the first design however
instead of plain white for the background, I gave
this one a paper background as I felt this gave a
nice affect in comparison to the first draft. This
one contained another geometric design as I
really liked this part about the first design and as
well as this, the colour scheme remained the
same on this design as it really did appeal to me
on the first design. I feel like there was a little too
much blank space above the information on the
right of the business card and I considered adding
my logo there, making it a one-sided business
card however I did not like this idea all that much.
I did not like this draft at all and because of this it
was my least favourite design out of the three
drafts that I prepared for my business card.
5. Draft Three:
This was actually my favourite design out of the three as
despite the fact it was only a one-sided design, it was
simplistic enough in my eyes that it caused it to stand out in
comparison to the other two. It includes all of the relevant
information, my company's logo as well as anything else I
felt it should include however, apart from this I really liked
the simplicity of it all. I made sure that my logo and the text
on this design was a dark grey instead of the jett black every
other design had as this was softer on the eyes which I
realised was actually something I liked. The colours were a
lot less obnoxious in my opinion. I liked the layout of a lot
and if I had more social media platforms under the name of
my company, I would include them however the only
account I had ready for my company was Instagram and it
felt a little bit ridiculous to only have one social media page
available on my business card, therefore leading to my idea
to just remove them altogether.
6. Feedback on my Business Card:
I had included each of the business card designs above the questions of my survey so
that those taking the survey each had a visual representation for the options they
were given. To open up the survey, I began by asking those I sent this form to which of
the designs they felt was their favourite business card design as I needed to know
this, so I knew the context for their next few answers.
The second question I asked was an important one as I wanted to
know what specifically about the design, they had picked
appealed to them. Those who chose the third option seemed to
like it as it was simple but as well as that it looked professional
enough which was a big relief to me as it meant that the business
card was giving off the impression that I had intended for it to
give off. The one person who has chosen the first option added
that they liked the first option as the design had caught their eye
which is understandable given that it was a geometric design
however seeing as the majority chose the simpler design, it
showed me that the simplistic was more appealing.
I then asked those taking my survey what they would change about the design they
had chosen given they had the choice so it meant that I could experiment and change
my design along with what they had said. The changed I will be making is to make
sure that everything is nice and central seeing as this is one aspect that someone
would have changed and as well as this, apparently the titles on the third design were
too large so I will change this when I touch up the third design.
7. Experimentation with final design:
This was the first change to the third design and in this I extended the line between the logo and the pieces of
information on the business card. I also rearranged the layout of the text so that it was better spaced as this was
something that had bugged me about the first draft of this design. I also played around with different fonts and the
two below were my favourite outcomes, one being 'Eczar Semibold' and the other being 'Source Serif Pro.' I chose
both of these are they are Serif fonts and I wanted to use a Serif font rather than a Sans-Serif font to project a sense
of professionalism which I really wanted.
8. Final Business Card design:
I decided that I preferred this design over the others
that I had created. I liked the paper effect on this one.
It adds a nice feel to the business card and makes it
seem less plain than it would have given the
background was plain white. I made sure I added the
logo of my business to the business card in its own
section so that it stood out more than the other things
featured on my business card. Along with this I
decided to add little symbols onto the business card
alongside the pieces of information that aligned with
the symbols. (These being my phone number, email
address, website URL and address.) I chose a Serif font
to portray the fact that this is a business card for a
professional business which I felt was something
important seeing as it is a multimedia business. I felt
that I was very happy with the design of my business
card as I made sure to take others comments into mind
when I touched up the design so that I was appealing
to what others wanted to see from this. I feel it looks
professional and well-made. Given I were to print this
out as my actual product I'd be very pleased with it.
9. Evaluation of my Business Card:
My business card aligns well with the colour scheme I had chosen when I made my
logo, sticking with a gray scale theme as this was what appealed to me the most.
The background is patterned in a way that isnt too intrusive on the eyes which I
liked as it added a nice touch to my business card whilst not making it too busy.
The way I sectioned the business card is also a feature I liked that I added as it
created a nice separation without looking very out of place.
My research really helped me when it came to creating my own business card
designs as it not only showed me the necessities that needed to be included on my
business card however it also showed me design wise what appealed to me the
most and what I did not want from my own design (such as unappealing colours,
fonts and layout choices.) I made sure that I added all of the important information
on my business card such as my full name as I felt it added a personal touch to the
card as it gave potential clients a way to address me if needed but it also added a
feeling of familiarity between my client and my business.
