2. Be familiar with the following terms and
their effects;
FLAMMABLE - They burn.
IRRITANTS- They irritate eyes, lungs and
skin.
TOXIC- They are poisonous, effective either
the short or long term.
CARCINOGENIC- They cause cancer.
3. TERATOGENIC- They cause defects in the
unborn fetus.
MUTAGENIC- They cause genetic mutations.
EXPLOSIVE - They explode, usually on being
mixed with air.
CORROSIVE - They burn the eyes, lungs or
skin.
4. SAFETY RULES
A. Eye Protection
This device must worn at all
times in the laboratory.
5. B. Clothing and Personal Items
Shoes must be worn during the entire time
that you are in the laboratory.
Students are not allowed to wear expensive
clothing in the lab.
Laboratory aprons or lab coats may be worn
to provide extra protection from accidents
and spills.
6. Handling Chemicals
1. Treat all chemicals in the lab as toxic
substances.
2. Smoking, drinking and eating are
forbidden in the laboratory.
3. Consult the laboratory director for
alternatives to lab, if you are pregnant.
7. 4. Do not taste anything in the laboratory.
5. Do not place your mouth on any chemical
equipment.
6. Keep your hands and face clean.
8. 7. Avoid inhalation of fumes of any kind.
8. Never leave excess or spilled chemicals on
equipment.
9. Avoid violent splattering by always pouring
concentrated solutions.
9. 10. Do not point in the mouth of a reaction
vessel containing chemicals toward yourself or
anyone else.
11. Never leave any reaction unattended.
12. Most organic substances are flammable,
sparks, flames and other ignition sources
should be kept out of the laboratory.
10. Additional Safety Guidelines
Never do unauthorized experiments.
Never work alone in laboratory.
Keep your lab space clean and organized.
Do not leave an on-going experiment unattended.
Always inform your instructor if you break a thermometer.
Do not clean mercury yourself!!
Never taste anything. Never pipette by mouth; use a bulb.
Never use open flames in laboratory unless instructed by
TA.
11. Check your glassware for cracks and chips each time you
use it. Cracks could cause the glassware to fail during use
and cause serious injury to you or lab mates.
Maintain unobstructed access to all exits, fire
extinguishers, electrical panels, emergency showers, and
eye washes.
Do not use corridors for storage or work areas.
Do not store heavy items above table height.
Areas containing lasers, biohazards, radioisotopes, and
carcinogens should be posted accordingly.
Be careful when lifting heavy objects. Only shop staff may
operate forklifts or cranes.
Clean your lab bench and equipment, and lock the door
before you leave the laboratory.
