“Look carefully then how you
walk, not as unwise but as
wise, making the best use of
the time, because the days are

of our time on earth.

Perceptions:
Many Christians hold a decidedly
unbiblical view of work. Some view it as a
curse, or at least as part of the curse of
living in a fallen world.
Others make a false distinction between
what they perceive as the sacred—
serving God—and the secular—
everything else, office work, sports, etc.
And others make it into an idol (work),
expecting it to provide them with their
identity and purpose in life as

Christ says, “Occupy till I come”
[Luke 19:13]. It may be but
a few years until our life’s
history shall close, but we must
occupy
till then.—The Review and
Herald, April 21, 1896.

Christ would have everyone
educate himself to calmly
contemplate His second
appearing. All are to search the
Word
of God daily, but not neglect
present duties.—Letter 28,
1897.
13.
Christ declared that when He
comes some of His waiting
people will be engaged in business
transactions. Some will
be sowing in the field, others
reaping and gathering in the
harvest, and others grinding at the
mill. It is not God’s will
that His elect shall abandon life’s
duties and responsibilities and
give themselves up to idle
contemplation, living in a religious
dream.—Ms 18a, 1901.

History of wages
Most likely farming, herding, fishing.
Most likely they received goods or food for
the work they did
During the time of the kings, some people
were paid in weighed pieces of gold or silver
Around 600 B.C., the Persian Empire began
making coins, which were sometimes used to
pay workers.
Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach
for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for
money Micah 3:11

After Jacob had stayed with him for
a whole month, 15 Laban said to
him, “Just because you are a relative
of mine, should you work for me for
nothing? Tell me what your wages
should be.” Gen 29v4,15

Jesus told in Matthew 20.1-16
describes vineyard workers being
paid the amount of one day’s wage
Now we have call centers, factory
workers etc

In other words
there is a form of activity,
labor, wages in the olden
times, in Jesus times as well!

LIVING ON THIS EARTH.
QUESTION: ARE ADVENTISTS
EXCUSED FOR NOT WORKING?
Is it all about God and God alone
nothing else?
I guess we are asking the wrong
questions. It is not about God vs
work. As Adventists we should
think differently now. It should
be God and his work.
22.
It is not about “I can work on
Sabbath days” vs “Keeping
the Sabbath Holy”
We should not work on

Japanese Culture
Work 14 hours a day, resulting
to minimal time with the
family and possibly less time
for God.
Philippine Culture

What is work?
Work is God’s gift to us. It
should not be seen as secular
but a ground that should be
tilled with God's love!
He who does nothing but pray
will soon cease to pray. Steps
to Christ p101
27.
1. Through work we serve people.
Most work is part of a huge
network of interconnected jobs,
industries, goods and services
that work together to meet
people’s physical needs. Other
jobs meet people’s aesthetic and
spiritual needs as well. “In the
same way, let your light shine
before others, so that they may
see your good works and give
glory to your Father who is in
heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
And the effort to bless others will
react in blessings upon
ourselves. SS 79
28.
2. Through work we meet our
own needs. Work allows us to
exercise the gifts and abilities
God gives each person, whether
paid or unpaid. God expects
adults to provide for themselves
and not mooch off others.
Scripture says, “If one will not
work, neither let him eat!” 2
Thessalonians 3:10;
He becometh poor that dealeth
with a slack hand: but the hand
of the diligent maketh rich.
Proverbs 10:4
29.
3. Through work we meet our family’s
needs. God expects the heads of
households to provide for their families.
He says, “If anyone does not provide for
his relatives, and especially for his
immediate family, he has denied the
faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
1 Timothy 5:8
The only way to grow in grace is to be
disinterestedly doing the very work
which Christ has enjoined upon us—to
engage, to the extent of our ability, in
helping and blessing those who need
the help we can give them. Strength
comes by exercise. SS p80
30.
4. Through work we earn money to
give to others. In both the Old and
New Testaments, God tells us to be
generous in meeting the needs of
the poor and those who minister to
us spiritually. Every man according
as he purposeth in his heart, so let
him give; not grudgingly, or of
necessity: for God loveth a cheerful
giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 But in His
infinite love He chose to make us co-
workers with Himself, with Christ
and the angels, that we might share
the blessing, the joy, the spiritual
uplifting, which results from this
unselfish ministry. SS 79
31.
THE FOUR PRINCIPLES SATISFIES THE TEXT
AND SOP:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the
Lord and not for men, knowing that from
the Lord you will receive the inheritance as
your reward. You are serving the Lord
Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever
you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1
Corinthians 10:31) .. don't forget this
principle, we still uphold our vocation.
Love to Jesus will be manifested in a desire
to work as He worked for the blessing and
uplifting of humanity. SS 77 .. we can only
do this if we go out and reach out. stand
out.
32.
It is not about Sabbath vs
work. It is not about God and
no work. It is God, Sabbath,
and employment.
We just have to fight fiercely
not only sin but the challenges
that await us when we seek
employment that is favourable
to God. It is difficult on our
strength but He promised...
What are we going to do?

Prayer and effort, effort and
prayer, will be the business of
your life. You must pray as
though the efficiency and
praise were all to God, and
labor as though duty were all
your own. Testimonies for
the Church V4 p538 /1881/

“Ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver
and gold;...but with the
precious blood of Christ, as of
a lamb without blemishand
without spot.” 1 Peter 1:18,

36.
God does not require us to
give up anything that it is for
our best interest to retain.... It
is a mistake to entertain the
thought that God is pleased to
see His children suffer. All
heaven is interested in the
happiness of man. SS p46
37.
Do not wait to feel that you
are made whole, but say, “I
believe it; it is so, not because
I feel it, but because God has
promised.” Jesus says, “What
things soever ye desire, when
ye pray, believe that ye receive
them, and ye shall have
them.” Mark 11:24.

Lord declares by His prophet, “I
have loved thee with an
everlasting love: therefore with
loving-kindness have I drawn
thee.” Jeremiah 31:3.
