• Newborn infection –Are the infection of the
neonate[newborn]acquired during prenatal
development or in the first four weeks of life.
3. VULNERABILITY TO NEWBORN
INFECTION
• Vulnerability to infection occurs due to the following
reasons;
– Newborn are immunodeficiency and prone to higher incidence
of infection; preterm babies are even more prone to infection.
– Immediately after birth the skin is more easily irritated and
damage and the baby’s bowel is not colonized with normal
protective flora
– Acquired immunity develops and improves with ongoing
exposure to pathogenic microorganism.
– At birth the baby has immune protection from the mother but
immunoglobulins are deficient.
– During the early weeks of life the baby also have deficiencies in
both the quantity and quality of neutrophilis
