The Profile of Young Learners
Luana & Iarisma
• Which personal characteristics do you
expect from a young learner ?
• Young Learner Characteristics
 They all have an enormous potential for learning;
 YL have formed ideas and views on what they like and do
not like;
 YL have difficulties to understand abstract concepts as
grammar.
• What do YL need to increase the proccess
of learning ?
 Latest technology
 Competitive activities
 A relaxed and constructive atmosphere
 Feel comfortable and safe in their learning environment;
 Multisensory tasks
• What are the questions that a teacher can
ask him or herself before planning a lesson for
an YL by trying to balance their “ energy” ?
 Have I planned a game towards the end of the lesson
rather than at the beginning ? ( So they don’t get overexcited
in the initial stages of the lesson.)
 Have I included a good combination of individual, pair and
group work?
 Is there sufficient variety to maintain their attention ?
 Do I know my Ss enough to prepare an exciting lesson ?
• Establishing routines
• One important Young Learner’s characteristic is that they
respond well to familiarity and challenge, in other words,
they like to know what and how they are going to do every
class.
* We can help the learners stay focused by having
procedures such as regular classroom routines, clear
behaviour rules and well thought out organisation of tasks,
activities and grouping.
• Training the learners
• Your learners need to concentrate, or when to make the
most of their pair work, can be a hard task to achieve. Your
learners need a training period to establish the kind of
respectful and organized environment that is needed if
learning is going to happen.
• On the part of the teacher, it requires time, patience and
repetitive insistence. In other words being persistent
without being threatening. More experienced teacher can
provide valuable advice and guidance, so discuss with
them ways in which they have trained their learners.

  • 7. • Establishing routines • One important Young Learner’s characteristic is that they respond well to familiarity and challenge, in other words, they like to know what and how they are going to do every class. * We can help the learners stay focused by having procedures such as regular classroom routines, clear behaviour rules and well thought out organisation of tasks, activities and grouping.
  • 8. • Training the learners • Your learners need to concentrate, or when to make the most of their pair work, can be a hard task to achieve. Your learners need a training period to establish the kind of respectful and organized environment that is needed if learning is going to happen.
  • 9. • On the part of the teacher, it requires time, patience and repetitive insistence. In other words being persistent without being threatening. More experienced teacher can provide valuable advice and guidance, so discuss with them ways in which they have trained their learners.
