2. Science Fair for Mozambican
Students and Young Scientists
In March through May 2015, IFPRI, in a close collaboration with USAID
Mozambique and Mozambique’s Ministry of Science and Technology, organized
two scientific conferences and two capacity-building trainings targeting
Mozambican university students and young Mozambican scientists. These
activities were part of IFPRI’s Mozambique Strategic Support Program
(MozSSP) portfolio. IFPRI has been involved actively in both the design and
implementation of these events.
3. Objective
The conferences, titled Science and Technology for Tomorrow: Accelerating
Mozambique’s Aspirations, were held in two major cities: Maputo and
Nampula. Mozambican undergraduate and graduate science students living in
two major geographical areas of the country (the northern and southern parts
of Mozambique) were the targets of these conferences. These events were
meant to give an opportunity to the participants to present their research,
learn about future career opportunities, and interact with their peers and
leaders in their field.
The two capacity-building trainings were intended to deepen students’
understanding of doing scientific research and to improve students’ scientific
research presentation skills. The trainings were given at the two main
Mozambican Universities (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo and
Universidade Lúrio in Nampula) a few weeks before the conferences. The
students who had a chance to present their academic research at the
conferences were able to demonstrate the skills they acquired from the
capacity-building training.
4. Outcome
120 graduate and undergraduate students were trained in improving their
scientific research presentation skills.
66 graduate and undergraduate students presented their papers.
22 graduate and undergraduate students presented posters.
13 academic institutions participated.
