to be a part of this journey. Having witnessed the industry transform from what it was to what it is
now, I see that the core values of HR - recruiting, nurturing and managing performances - have been

changer
The only thing that has remained constant about Human Resources is its acronym HR. The rest, as
they say, is history. Well, not quite literally but yes, the industry has gone through immense
transformation over the last few years and continues to keep evolving more than meets the eye.
Be it the hiring process or the kind of HR policies in a workplace, people and data analytics to
paperless profiles -you name it - and we can spot at least one prominent change in every sphere.
There’s something else you must have noticed – subtle yet consistent changes in employer
perspectives and the way in which prospective candidates and current employees are recruited,
nurtured, retained and rewarded.
Let’s roll the spinning wheel and take a look at some of the more prominent trends that have altered
the course of the sector and have continued to shake up things and how.
The role of the Human Resources industry is
witnessing a transformational shift today. Gone are the
days when HR meant merely hiring and signing off. Let’s take a look at
some trends that have added a strategic edge to the role.
Talk of disruption innovation and how can one not mention technology, a vital facilitator in
automating HR processes - using algorithms and Artificial Intelligence to identify and sort extensive
search results and reaching out to appropriate candidates. Cut back to times when the HR
department had to literally sift through heaps of paper first and then contact a group of probable
for a face-to-face meet. Imagine the amount of time and paper spent! The HR sector has been
increasingly leveraging technology to simplify the hiring process. For instance, online assessment
tools used by a lot of companies today share a 360-degree perspective of the prospective
candidate’s fit into a particular role. We’ve also come across companies using Virtual Reality (VR) to
create a standard 3D work ambience to better test and gauge a candidate’s fit into a specific role.

If you thought a job meant an end to learning, think
again. As HR, it’s imperative to nurture the talent pools
existing in an organization and hence the need to
encourage upskilling employees consistently. Thanks
to people data and analytics, there’s a growing focus
on expanding the skill-set of workers to an extent
where you can embrace a future-proof culture.
Of the many emerging trends in this industry, there’s a noticeable tilt towards employee experience.
With millennials accounting for a large share of the workforce today, there’s an increasing need to
make every experience count. Probably why you shouldn’t be taken aback if your manager has
frequent open doors and taken an interest in your professional growth or checks on your travel
plans for your next PTO.
If you were to ask me what plays a pivotal role in enhancing employee experience, my answer is
personalization. And I quote a Gartner study, which suggests that HR leaders should be able to
recognize and personalize the unique needs of their employees and use such specific knowledge to
ensure a more relevant workplace experience.
For the uninitiated, employee experience refers to a developing workplace ecosystem which brings
together engagement, culture and performance management on a single platform. This, in a
unique way, builds and develops the‘experience’and links back to optimal.
performances and productivity. And how does HR monitor experience? Needless to say, through a
tech trail which includes employee wellness apps and feedback tools, to name a few.
The message is unanimous across the globe – a workplace looks best when diverse and inclusive.
Right from a conscious effort to maintain gender balance to compliance in matters of sexual
harassment, or flexibility for young, working mothers and a LGBTQ-friendly workspace – the HR has
its eye open for all. Tapping diverse talent pools from different communities too strengthens the
diversity in an organization. Needless to say, the role of the HR extends way beyond its scope of
recruiting to becoming a caretaker of the organizational culture. Agreed that this is a factor that
often transcends visible demographics, but building specific D&I programs can come in handy.
Employers can use VR to give shortlisted candidates - especially the offshore ones - a virtual tour of
the work space. On another note, how about using a machine learning to analyze existing data to
streamline and improvise processes as well as enhance efficiency considerably? If this wasn’t
enough, then the tech trail also encourages inter-channel integration and quick turnarounds.
