Introduction:
Bioprocess engineering is the subdiscipline within biotechnology that is responsible for translating the discoveries of
life science into practical products, processes, or systems that can serve the needs of society.
or
Bioprocess engineering, also biochemical engineering, is a specialization of chemical engineering or Biological
engineering, It deals with the design and development of equipment and processes for the manufacturing of products
such as agriculture, food, feed, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, chemicals, and polymers and paper from biological
materials & treatment of waste water.

4
Objectives:
• Biomass production
• Enzyme production
• Metabolite production
• Recombinant protein production

5
A bioprocess is specific process that uses complete living cells or their components to obtain desired products. When a
product is manufacture in bulk amount, bioprocess engineering plays important role.
• Production of synthetic amino acid, beverages, vaccines, hormones, antibiotics all these are accomplish with bioprocess
engineering.
• In solving environmental, pharmaceutical, industrial and agricultural problems
Aim & Importance :
Bioprocess engineering aims to generate core competencies through an understanding of the complementary biotechnology
disciplines and their interdependence, and an appreciation of the challenges associated with the application
of engineering principles in a life science context.

Stages in bioprocess development:
Upstream process: refers to the first step in which biomolecules are produced by biotic systems (micro-organisms, cell lines
etc) in bioreactors.
Downstream process: refers to recovery and purification of biosynthetic products, recycling salvageable components and
proper effluent treatment and disposal.

The most important applications of bioprocess-engineering is
• Research and development related to agriculture and food involved in production of agricultural chemicals for control
of animal and plant diseases
• Growth-stimulating agents for improved yield
• Increasing bioprocess efficiencies for fermented foods, natural food additives, food enzymes as processing aids, and
separation and purification of the products.
Applications of bioprocess-engineering:

8
• Use of plant-cell culture systems to produce secondary metabolites or chemical substances of economic importance.
• Efficient use of renewable biomass resources for production of liquid fuel and chemical feedstocks.
• Manufacturing product in small scale plant is simple when it come to mass product all the suitable parameter are considered.
Production of synthetic amino acid, beverages, vac- cines, hormones, antibiotics all these are accomplish with bioprocess engineering
Applications of bioprocess-engineering:

Conclusion:
A bioprocess is specific process that uses complete living cells or their components to obtain desired products. Transport of
energy and mass is fundamental to many biological and environmental processes. Areas, from food processing to thermal
design of building to biomedical devices to pollution control and global warming, require knowledge of how energy and
mass can be transported through materials. When a product is manufacture in bulk amount, bioprocess engineering plays
important role.
for example: Production of synthetic amino acid, beverages, vaccines, hormones, antibiotics all these are accomplish with
bioprocess engineering.
